Late rally not enough as Lehigh falls 8-6 to Kent State in opener of Duke Inaugural Tournament

3/2/2018 1:26:00 PM | Softball

DURHAM, N.C. – A pinch-hit two-run double by sophomore Lexi van Ooyen helped Lehigh rally to tie Kent State in the bottom of the sixth but the Golden Flashes scored twice in the seventh and held off another Mountain Hawk comeback attempt to claim an 8-6 win Friday in the opening game of the Duke Inaugural Tournament at Duke Softball Stadium.

In a matchup of the defending MAC and Patriot League champions, Kent State capitalized on three Lehigh errors which led to three unearned runs as the Golden Flashes took a 6-3 lead before the Mountain Hawks pulled even with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Seniors Nicole Yozzo and Rachel Timberman and sophomore Reva Alderman each had three hits to pace the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 1-5 with the setback. Kent State improves to 8-4.

Kent State went in front with two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. A two-out error was followed by a Maria Cegledy triple and a Kaitlyn Miller RBI single. A two-run single by Jen Cader in the third inning extended Kent State's lead to 4-0.

Lehigh pulled two runs back in the bottom of the third. Junior Brie Gerhardt led off the frame with the Mountain Hawks' first hit, a double to right field. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with nobody out before an infield single by sophomore Hannah Edwards scored Gerhardt. A ground out by sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith brought home Lehigh's second run.

The teams traded runs in the fourth, with the Golden Flashes adding one on a two-out, run-scoring error, and the Mountain Hawks getting an RBI from Timberman, who singled home senior Katie Schultz after Alderman led off the inning with a double.

A wild pitch allowed Kent State to go up 6-3 before Alderman ignited Lehigh's sixth-inning rally with another leadoff double. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Timberman, who delivered a sacrifice fly to bring Lehigh within 6-4. Head coach Fran Troyan opted to bat van Ooyen for Yozzo and the sophomore delivered her first career extra base hit, with the two runs pulling the Mountain Hawks even.

A leadoff walk followed by a RBI double by Allie Luther allowed Kent State to reclaim the lead and a Carlee Selle RBI single added an insurance run.

Lehigh's seventh-inning rally was spurred by back-to-back one-out singles by senior Carolyn Wright and junior Ashley Rabago, but Kent State pitcher Madi Huck picked up a strikeout and induced a force out to end the game.

Huck came into the game with a 0.21 ERA, but Lehigh got to her for six runs on 11 hits. She walked three and struck out four, improving to 6-0 on the season with the victory.

Junior Emily Sorem started in the circle for Lehigh and was charged with six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Sorem struck out for and issued just one walk. Sophomore Parker Boyd (0-3) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in 0.2 innings of work.

The Mountain Hawks will play two games at the Duke Inaugural Tournament on Saturday as they will face Yale at 10:30 a.m. and tournament host Duke at 3:30 p.m. The Duke game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra which is available on WatchESPN.
