BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks concluded day two of the Patriot League Championships with their first champion crowned as freshman Megan Fennell won the women's 1-meter dive. Lehigh lowered four school records on the day as the women sit in second place and the men are in sixth.
Â
Fennell entered the 1-meter finals as the No. 2 seed behind Army's Serica Hallstead, but each competitor's score was reset to zero as they entered the final session. Fennell and Hallstead battled back-and-forth throughout the final session, but it was Fennell who pulled into the lead for good with her final dive. Less than five points separated first from third place as Fennell posted the winning score of 270.5 to edge out Hallstead in second with a score of 267.55 and Navy's Maddie Keiser who placed third with a score of 264.95.
Â
Fennell's score of 270.5 broke her own school record of 266.85, which she set on November 17 in the dual meet against Lafayette. The freshman is the first female diver in program history to win a conference title in either the 1-meter or 3-meter dive. To put it into perspective, the Lehigh women's program first began competing in the 1973-74 season. The Mountain Hawks competed in the East Coast Conference prior to joining the Patriot League for 1990-91 season.
Â
The night began with Meghan Thompson taking second in the 500 freestyle. The senior posted a time of 4:47.96, which lowered her own school record mark of 4:48.67 set at last year's championships. Senior Abby Thomson placed first in the consolation finals with a time of 4:54.78 to place ninth overall, while sophomore Tori Connolly placed 10th and freshman Sam Gallego placed 15th overall.
Â
Sophomore Walker Wilson represented Lehigh men in the 500 free finals and placed fifth with school-record time of 4:26.72, lowering the old mark of 4:28.89 set in 2014. Sophomore Kevin Fleck placed 13th overall with a personal-best time of 4:32.20.
Â
Junior Courtney Ferreira was Lehigh's lone representative in the women's 200 IM as she placed second in the consolation finals with a time of 2:03.22, good for 10th overall. Her time just gets under the previous school record mark of 2:03.24 set last season.
Â
Lehigh had a very strong showing in the 50 freestyle as it came down to a photo finish to decide the top four spots. Defending champion Payton Miles came up just short of defending her title as she placed second with a time of 23.13, behind Army's Bailey Smith who won with a time of 23.08. Ann Foley was also in the mix as she placed third with a time of 23.16 and Julianne Koch rounded out the Lehigh field with an eighth-place finish with a time of 23.54.
Â
Zach Tieke represented the Lehigh men in the 50 free as he competed in the consolation finals. The senior placed 15th overall with a season-best time of 20.80.
Â
In addition to Fennell's title-winning performance, junior Rayna Smilowitz also scored team points as she placed fourth in the consolation finals. Her score of 216.00 was good for 12th overall.
Â
The women closed out the night by taking down another school record. Anna Francisco, Allison Morel, Audra Smires and Foley combined to place fifth in the 400 medley relay with a school-record time of 3:48.06.
Â
The men finished the night by placing sixth in the 400 medley relay. Wilson, Tyler Christ, Jimmy Davey and Tieke combined for a time of 3:19.81, which narrowly missed the school record pace of 3:19.13.
