
Records Fall on Opening Day of Patriot League Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Day one of the 2018 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships in Annapolis, Md. concluded with the Lehigh men's and women's teams combing to set three new school records. The women sit second in the standings, while the men are in sixth with day one in the books.

The evening finals session began with the women's 200 medley relay team of Anna Francisco, Anna Thomas, Audra Smires and Payton Miles combing to place fourth with a school record mark of 1:43.14, lowering the previous record of 1:43.53 set in 2015.

The men's 200 medley relay of Dean Shafritz, Tyler Christ, Jimmy Davey and Zach Tieke also tabbed a fourth-place finish with a school record time of 1:30.22, which lowered the old record time of 1:30.86 set in 2014.

The men had one individual event on the night, which was the 3-meter dive. On the boards, junior Croldy Veliz picked up five team points for the men as he placed twelfth with a score of 210.10.

The women closed out the night with a big performance in the 800 freestyle relay. Ann Foley, Courtney Ferreira, Julianne Koch and Meghan Thompson combined for a second-place finish with a time of 7:12.04, which lowered the previous school record of 7:17.41 set last season and is the third-fastest time ever recorded at the Patriot League Championships. Navy won the event with a time of 7:10.63.

The Lehigh closed out their night with a fifth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. Kevin Fleck, Kian O'Brien, Teddy Smith and Walker Wilson laid down a time of 6:41.65, finishing off the school record pace of 6:37.70.

At the conclusion of day one of the 2018 Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh women sit in second place with 64 points. Navy leads the women's standings with 80 points, while Army ranks third with 62 points.

After day one on the men's side, Lehigh is sixth with 63 points. Navy leads the way with 132 points, Army is second with 107 and Boston U sits third with 72.

Action resumes tomorrow with another round of finals starting at 6 p.m. Tomorrow's events include the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 free, men's 1-meter dive and the 400 medley relay.
