Wilson, Lasco set for U.S. Winter National Swimming Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The U.S. Winter National Swimming and Diving Championships are ready to commence on Wednesday as the Lehigh men's swimming and diving team prepare to send two swimmers to the most elite race on this season's schedule.

For junior Walker Wilson and freshman Glenn Lasco, the road to the Patriot League Championships start with a stop in Greensboro to compete individually as preparation.

Wilson's fall season has absolutely set the tone for the rest of the season, as he gears up for his first appearance at Winter Nationals. He has already been named Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week once and has broken three school records this season in the 50 and 200 back and 500 free events.

Lasco already qualified for Winter Nationals over the summer before starting his career with the Mountain Hawks, so he has been preparing for this moment for quite some time now.

The biggest difference between this upcoming weekend and the rest of the season for both Wilson and Lasco at Lehigh is the competition will utilize long course meters instead of the usual NCAA short course yards, forcing swimmers to prepare differently for this kind of swimming in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

The other important thing to note about Winter Nationals is that it's officially the opening of the qualifying period for Olympic Trials in 2020. Both Wilson and Lasco hope that their cuts in the events will be good enough to be put up for consideration.

Wilson will compete in the 50 meter freestyle. The Olympic trial cut is set for 23.19. Wilson swam a 20.56 in short course yards, so it will be interesting to see how his time translates over to the meter format. He's also set to compete in the 200 meter free as well as the 400.

Like his teammate Wilson, Lasco will also compete in the 200 meter freestyle, where he swam a 1:38.12 in the 200 yard event earlier.

Both swimmers will be in action on Thursday, Nov. 29 and Friday Nov. 30. Wilson will be in action on Thursday in the preliminary swims at 9 a.m. on usaswimming.org. He will swim in the 400 free at 9:34 a.m. and then the 50 free at 10:54 a.m. Lasco and Wilson swim in the 200 free prelims at 10:48 a.m. on Friday, which will also be streamed live on usaswimming.org.

The 400 and 50 freestyle events will take place on Thursday with the finals starting at 5 p.m., streamed live on usaswimming.org. Wilson and Lasco will compete in the 200 freestyle on Friday at 5 p.m.

The A Finals will be streamed live on nbcsports.com, while the B Finals will be streamed live on usaswimming.org.
