Lehigh Caps Successful Weekend with Two Wins at Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Kyle Kirk and Alexander Fitzgerald each picked up wins as the Lehigh men's track and field team earned six podium finishes at Saturday's John Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse. Kirk raced ahead of the field in the 500m and Fitzgerald broke the tape in the 5,000m, while Emre Soybas (400m), Kyle Berman (1,000m), Ryan Givens (HJ) and Anastasios Mouzakis (WT) all earned third place finishes.
On the track, Soybas earned a podium finish in third place of the 400m dash, crossing the line in 51.42. Running the 500m for the first time in his collegiate career, Kirk took first place in the event in 1:07.45, edging out a Rowan runner by 0.24 seconds.
Less than 24 hours after setting a PR in the 800m at Friday's Dr. Sander Invitational, Mitchell Daddario competed once again and captured a fourth place finish out of 53 in the 800m. Kyle Berman took third place overall in the 1,000m (2:35.10), less than 24 hours after running the mile at The Armory on Friday. In the mile, freshmen Eric Kersten and Michael Mitchell placed 10th and 11th, respectively, and Rafael Hernandez (4:44.28) placed 25th out of 59, all setting new PRs.
Over in the distance events, Fitzgerald opened the day for Lehigh by winning the 5,000m run, breaking the tape in the field of 27 runners in 15:20.59.
Elsewhere on the track, Evan El-Halawani placed ninth overall in the 60m hurdles in nine seconds flat, and Michael Camera led the way for Lehigh in 14th place out of 65 runners in the 60m dash (7.22).
In the field events, Givens led Lehigh by clearing 2.00 meters in the high jump, which landed him in third place overall. He also paced the Mountain Hawks in the long jump, finishing fourth overall after flying 6.96m. Michael Camera followed in 11th place. In the triple jump, Michael Gooding flew 14.03m to pace LU, finishing just off the podium in fourth.
Freshman Anastasios Mouzakis once again led the Mountain Hawks in the weight throw, landing on the podium in third place after throwing 16.97m. Riley LaRiviere (15.12m) and Adam Freesman (14.88m) both PR-ed to place seventh and eighth, respectively, out of 51. Over in the vault, Max Jordan led the Brown and White in sixth place at 4.25m.
Up next, Lehigh will head back to the Ocean Breeze Track in Staten Island, N.Y. next Saturday for the Villanova Invitational.
