Early goal lifts Sacred Heart past Lehigh, 1-0
9/3/2017 8:14:00 PM | Field Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A Sacred Heart goal just 1:45 into the game stood up as the difference as the Pioneers downed the Lehigh field hockey team, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field. The Mountain Hawks (1-3) controlled possession for much of the game, but couldn't find the back of the cage for a third straight contest.
"One of the things we discussed after Friday night was making sure that we took more control of the game and that we did a better job of fighting and moving the ball forward to execute inside the 25," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Today, this was the most fight I've seen from the team thus far and though it didn't result in a win, I'm happy progress was made."
Sacred Heart pounced on an early penalty corner chance. The initial shot was saved by Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Paige Innarella, but the Pioneers' Bridget LaRicca converted the rebound.
Lehigh responded with the game's next two shots, including a shot on goal from junior Teresa Carotenuto in the sixth minute, but Sacred Heart goalkeeper Emily Degennaro made the save.

The Mountain Hawks' most pressure came late in the first half, beginning in the 27th minute when they earned five penalty corners in the span of 3:21. Carotenuto had another shot that was saved while freshman Lenke Havas fired three shots in that stretch. The final chance was stopped by Degennaro, who helped her team go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh continued to pressure in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the cage as Sacred Heart held onto the 1-0 final.
Final shots were 8-6 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Innarella tallied three saves across a pair of Sacred Heart goalkeepers, who combined for four.
Lehigh will look to bounce back next weekend when it heads to Monmouth on Friday at 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks then host Ball State next Sunday (Sept. 10) at 12 p.m.
