Mountain Hawks drop road contest at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Defending MAAC Champion Monmouth scored three goals in the span of 14:02 midway through the first half and the Lehigh field hockey team couldn't overcome the deficit in a 7-0 defeat on Friday afternoon. Two Monmouth players each scored a pair of goals while Lehigh freshman goalkeeper Emma Gromacki tallied three saves in her collegiate debut.
Each team had a shot and penalty corner in the early going, with Lehigh's shot coming from junior Kendra Sandhu off a corner attempt. Just over three minutes later, Monmouth opened the scoring at the 11:03, and went on to goals at 15:44 and 25:05, to take a 3-0 halftime advantage.
Lehigh came out of halftime with the first two second-half shots, including one on goal by junior Isabel McKeown, but Monmouth goalkeeper Christen Piersanti made the save. Monmouth came back with a goal at the 40:53 mark, adding three more second-half tallies for the 7-0 final.
Lehigh will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Ball State at 12 p.m.
