Lehigh drops 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to Ball State

9/10/2017 4:00:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore Amanda Boyer scored in the 26th minute to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead, which held until the final minutes, but Ball State equaled the score with 1:54 remaining and scored the game-winner 9:17 into overtime to hand the Mountain Hawks a tough 2-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon. Lehigh held an 11-5 edge in shots over the first 65 minutes, but was outshot 9-1 the rest of the way.

"We had a fabulous first 65 minutes, but unfortunately, we allowed them back into the game in the last five minutes then we didn't execute when we had the opportunity in overtime," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Unfortunately, it was a better-played game overall for our team, but we need to be executing the details and today, we didn't execute those details."

The first half saw 10 combined shots, seven from Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring at the 25:53 mark as junior Lindsay Alvarez fired towards the cage and Boyer made a deflection by the far post, giving Lehigh a 1-0 advantage.

Ball State tallied the first two shots of the second half, but freshman goalkeeper Emma Gromacki made the stops. Later in the half, Lehigh had a flurry of four shots (two on goal) in 6:25, but Cardinals' goalkeeper Grace Chavez stood tall.

The Cardinals increased the pressure in the final minutes of regulation, earning their first penalty corner of the game in the 66th minute and scoring the game-tying goal at the 68:06 mark.

Both teams had golden opportunities in overtime. Just 1:31 into the extra session, junior Isabel McKeown had a chance right in front of the cage, but Chavez made the stop. Ball State responded with the next three shots, including a chance by Darbi Gullett in the 78th minute, but Gromacki made a huge save. However, less than two minutes later, the Cardinals turned a penalty corner into the game-winning goal as Ball State picked up its second straight overtime victory over Lehigh, both coming in Bethlehem.

Final shots were 14-12 in favor of Ball State while Lehigh had five penalty corners to the Cardinals' four. Gromacki finished with six saves for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday when it opens Patriot League play at Holy Cross.
