
Lehigh opens PL play at Holy Cross Friday, heads to Siena Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team is set to open Patriot League play on Friday night when it travels to Holy Cross to face the Crusaders. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks then head to Siena on Sunday to face the Saints at 1 p.m.

Lehigh is coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Ball State on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks controlled play for the first 65+ minutes, holding an 11-5 advantage in shots over the first 65:53, but the Cardinals held a 9-1 edge in shots the rest of the way. Two of those shots found the back of the cage, the tying goal at the 68:06 mark and the winner 9:17 into overtime. Sophomore Amanda Boyer scored the Mountain Hawks' goal at the 25:53 mark. Freshman Emma Gromacki was strong on Sunday, making six saves, including a big overtime stop.

On Friday, the Mountain Hawks will be eying their first Patriot League opening win since 2009 when they picked up a 4-1 victory over Colgate.

Holy Cross is 2-3 on the season owning 2-0 wins over Quinnipiac and Rider. Most recently, the Crusaders dropped a 4-3 loss vs. Georgetown. Maureen Connolly has been stellar offensively, leading the team in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). Emily Loprete has six points (two goals, two assists) while Suzanne Noone and Casey Considine each have two goals. Marcia LaPlante has played every minute between the pipes, recording a 3.43 goals against average and 0.742 save percentage.

Last season, the Mountain Hawks picked up a big 1-0 win over Holy Cross behind a goal from Marissa Glatt. Overall, Lehigh has won three straight against the Crusaders to pull within 17-11 in the all-time series.

Siena is 0-6 on the season heading into a Friday matchup at Brown. Most recently, the Saints lost to Saint Francis (Pa.) 5-2 and Lock Haven 3-0. Five different Siena players have scored a goal this season while Fariyah Omarshah owns an assist and Katelyn McMahon has a defensive save. Mary Crumlish has started all six games in goal, recording a 3.76 GAA and 0.744 save percentage.

Lehigh is 15-0 all-time vs. Siena, which includes a 4-3 overtime win last season when the Mountain Hawks held a 36-9 edge in shots. Lehigh won 4-0 in 2015.
