Holy Cross surges past Mountain Hawks in second half

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Teresa Carotenuto evened the score late in the first half, but Holy Cross broke the tie with three goals in the first 11:41 of the second, on its way to downing the Mountain Hawks 5-1 on Friday evening in the Patriot League opener for both sides. Lehigh tallied the final seven shots of the first half, converting one of them into a goal, but the Crusaders snatched momentum back at the beginning of the second.

The game's first shot came at the 6:51 mark, which Lehigh freshman goalkeeper Emma Gromacki saved, but moments later, Holy Cross' Emily Loprete gave her side a 1-0 advantage.

Lehigh's first shot didn't come until the 21st minute, but from that point on, the Mountain Hawks peppered the Crusaders with seven shots, creating three penalty corners while Holy Cross was held shot-less for the final 18:39 of the first half and without a penalty corner for the final 18:56. The pressure led to the equalizer as Carotenuto scored her first goal of the season at the 30:23 mark, converting a rebound to pull Lehigh even.

The Crusaders scored on their first two shots of the second half, at the 38:14 and 39:11 marks, putting the Mountain Hawks into a hole they couldn't overcome. Lehigh did fire five second-half shots on goal, looking to get back in the game, but Holy Cross goalie Marcia LaPlante stood tall.

Final shots were 13-9 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to Siena to face the Saints. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. and live video for the contest will be available, here ($7.95).
