BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team will look to bounce back from a tough weekend when it heads to Monmouth on Friday (4 p.m.) and hosts Ball State on Sunday (12 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of 1-0 defeats, home vs. La Salle and at Sacred Heart. Lehigh's offense has struggled this season, but its defense has impressed, allowing just six goals over four games. Four of the goals were against an Ohio State team that went on to beat No. 9 Louisville this past weekend, 2-1.
This past Friday, the Mountain Hawks outshot La Salle 17-7 (including 12-2 in shots on goal), but couldn't find the back of the cage. On Sunday, Lehigh controlled possession for the majority of the contest, but a Pioneers' goal less than two minutes in proved to be the difference. The Mountain Hawks had one flurry of five penalty corners in the span of 3:21 late in the first half, which was their most impressive pressure of the afternoon.
Coming off a 17-3 season, MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016, Monmouth is 2-2 early in the 2017 campaign, beating Bucknell (6-2) and Kent State (5-1) before falling at William & Mary (2-1) and No. 10 Virginia (5-3). Six different Monmouth players have already scored multiple goals, led by a team-high nine points from Rachel Konowal (three goals, three assists). Kelly Hanna has tallied seven points (three goals, one assist) while Meg Donahue owns six (two goals, two assists), as does Julie Laszlo (one goal, team-high four assists). Annie Deusch owns the team's only defensive save while Christen Piersanti has started three of the four games in goal, with a 2.67 goals against average and 0.667 save percentage. Gabi Millan started the season opener and stopped five-of-seven shots sent her way against Bucknell.
Monmouth leads the all-time series, 9-7. Lehigh won the first four all-time meetings, but Monmouth has responded by winning nine of the next 13. The Mountain Hawks' last win came in Sept. 23, 2012, a 2-1 home victory. This will mark the eighth straight season the teams will square off.
Out of the MAC, Ball State is also 2-2 heading into a Friday matchup at La Salle. The Cardinals began the season with wins over Saint Louis (5-0) and Ohio University (4-1) before falling to Boston University (2-1) and UMass-Lowell (2-1 in overtime). Michelle Shampton leads the team with eight points (three goals, two assists) while Sierra Jefferson owns seven (three goals, one assist) and Carley Shannon has five (two goals, one assist). Grace Chavez has played every minute in goal, tallying a 1.60 GAA and 0.750 save percentage.
Lehigh and Ball State have split two previous meetings, with Lehigh winning 5-1 in 1984 and Ball State winning 4-3 in overtime to begin 2012.
Lehigh will look to bounce back next weekend when it heads to Monmouth on Friday at 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks then host Ball State next Sunday (Sept. 10) at 12 p.m.
