Lehigh drops 4-0 final to Ohio State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung tough against Ohio State out of the Big Ten, but the Buckeyes (1-0) proved too much as they downed the Mountain Hawks (1-1) 4-0 in front of 653 fans on Sunday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Paige Innarella was stellar in goal, making a career-high 13 saves. Junior Kendra Sandhu also made a defensive stop.
Â
"We didn't play the way we wanted to on Friday night (vs. LIU Brooklyn), so we knew we had to bring a different level of intensity and energy to the game today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Ohio State is a fabulous team, they have a new coach and are very well coached. We weren't exactly sure what we were going to see because we couldn't watch film. We had to watch film from last year with a different coach and make a plan of attack guessing what they might do.
"I thought our team implemented our game plan very well defensively. We needed to do a better job of holding onto the ball moving forward. But we were able to outlet, which I was happy with, and we were able to defend their outlet, which are two big pieces of the game."
Â
Innarella began the day with a tremendous stop in the fourth minute, diving to her right to make a stick save off a penalty corner. In the 11th minute, the Mountain Hawks pressured, which led to a shot by freshman Drew Pecora, but Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro made the save.

Â
Ohio State broke through at the 17:07 mark when Maddy Humphrey converted a penalty stroke. The Buckeyes added two more in the first half and their fourth goal just over six minutes into the second. Lehigh responded by blanking Ohio State over the final 28:19, allowing just one shot on goal in that span.
Â
"Implementing a structure and a strategy with 48 hours notice after playing one game, watching film then moving into another game featuring opponents with very different styles, is extremely hard to do," said Dallmeyer. "We didn't do that well last year, so I'm happy we were able to take strides with our hockey IQ in what we were implementing, knowing that the team could receive information and put it on the field."
Â
Lehigh will return to action this Friday, Sept. 1 when it hosts La Salle at 5 p.m.
