BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a 1-1 season-opening weekend, the Lehigh field hockey will host La Salle on Friday (5 p.m.) before hitting the road to face Sacred Heart on Sunday (4:30 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks beat LIU Brooklyn in their season opener, 1-0 before dropping a 4-0 final to Ohio State on Sunday. Sunday's game will be played at Yale's Johnson Field.
Freshman Lenke Havas scored Lehigh's first goal of the season last Friday, giving the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, which proved to be the difference. Lehigh finished with a dominant 18-0 edge in shots and 10-0 advantage in shots on goal, but Blackbirds' goalkeeper Molly Jannell stopped nine-of-10 shots sent her way. It marked Lehigh's first season-opening shutout since a 1-0 win over Rider in 2000. Lehigh has also won consecutive season openers for the first time since winning five straight from 1996 to 2000.
The Mountain Hawks followed with a solid effort against the Buckeyes on Sunday. Ohio State didn't score until the 17:07 mark, coming off a penalty stroke, while the Buckeyes took advantage of 13 penalty corners to score three more goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Innarella shined with a career-high 13 saves while junior Kendra Sandhu made a defensive stop. The game saw 653 fans in attendance, an Ulrich Sports Complex facility-record crowd for field hockey.
For their efforts, Both Havas and Innarella were recognized as honorable mention on the Patriot League weekly honor roll.
La Salle enters the weekend 1-1 on the season, falling to Appalachian State (3-1) before defeating LIU Brooklyn (1-0). Mackenzie Karcher and Rialee Allen have scored the Explorers' goals while Emma Provost owns a 1.93 goals against average and 0.667 save percentage.
La Salle holds a slim 16-15-2 edge in the all-time series with the Explorers winning last September, 2-1 in overtime. The teams first met in 1977, a 3-2 Lehigh victory. The Mountain Hawks' last win was in September of 2011, a 4-3 overtime victory.
Sacred Heart is also 1-1 on the year, heading into a Saturday matchup at Yale. The Pioneers lost at Lock Haven (4-1) while defeating Saint Francis (Pa.) on the road (3-2). Makenna Crawford and Nichole Tolli are tied for the team lead with three points apiece (one goal, one assist each). Allie Brouhard and Bridget LaRiccia have goals as well. A pair of goalkeepers have split time so far, each playing 70 minutes. Emily Degennaro owns a 2.00 GAA and 0.333 save percentage while Hailey Power has recorded a 4.00 GAA and 0.750 save percentage.
