Lehigh falls to La Salle 1-0 despite dominant edge in shots

9/1/2017 7:19:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team finished with a 12-2 edge in shots on goal, but La Salle converted the game's only goal in the 29th minute to hand the Mountain Hawks a tough 1-0 defeat on Friday. Lehigh (1-2) also finished with an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners, but couldn't beat La Salle (2-1)  goalkeeper Emma Provost. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday at Sacred Heart.

"Today was a big learning experience and we have a lot of changes that need to be made before we can be competitive moving forward into league play," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "I'm glad we're learning these lessons early in the season. Tomorrow, we'll be better."

La Salle tallied the game's first two shots (both blocked) and penalty corner, but from there, the Mountain Hawks held the Explorers to just one shot the rest of the stanza. That shot came at the 28:20 mark and found the back of the cage as Lauren Lechleitner made a deflection off a penalty corner to give La Salle a 1-0 lead.

On the other end, Lehigh forced Provost to make three first-half stops, the first coming off the stick of freshman Lenke Havas in the 15th minute. Juniors Lindsay Alvarez and Teresa Carotenuto also had first-half shots on goal.

The Mountain Hawks amped up the pressure even more in the second half, tallying a 12-4 edge in shots, with nine coming on goal. Lehigh had several flurries, including in the 51st minute when it recorded three consecutive shots, two on goal, but Provost stood tall. A few minutes later, senior Julia Washburn's shot looked ticketed for the back of the cage, but La Salle's Katie O'Grady came up with the defensive save.

Lehigh had two more shots and a penalty corner in the 61st minute, continuing the pressure, but it wasn't enough.

Final shots were 17-7 edge in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal and 11-6 edge in penalty corners.

Lehigh will return to action on Sunday when it plays at Sacred Heart in a game that will be played at Yale's Johnson Field. Gametime is set for 4:30 p.m.
