BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team will culminate the season this Friday and Saturday as The University and the Goodman Campus Track and Field Complex will play host to the 2017 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The two-day event will commence on Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the men's 10K and run throughout the afternoon. Saturday will feature another full day of action starting at 10 a.m. Due to the impending inclement weather throughout the region, all high jump and pole vault events will take place inside Rauch Fieldhouse at their originally scheduled times. These are the only two events that can take place indoors and still have the marks be eligible for NCAA qualification. Campus Insiders will be broadcasting Saturday's events live online beginning at 11:50 a.m. A full meet schedule along with all links and information relevant to this weekend's championships can be found by clicking here.
Saturday will also feature a groundbreaking ceremony for Lehigh's new track and field building at the south end of the Goodman Campus Track. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and feature Lehigh Hall of Fame track and cross country coach John Covert, Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett and alumni.
Lehigh enters the championship meet with athletes ranked in the top five in 10 different events, including top seeds Maura Henderson (3,000 steeplechase) and Courtney Avery, the two-time reigning outdoor high jump champion. Lehigh holds each of the top three high jumps in the league entering this weekend courtesy of Avery (1.82m), Tyler Bannister (1.66m) and Jordan Otto (1.65m). Henderson also holds claim to the No. 2 spot in the 5K, while Katie Hatler (100m hurdles), Kaitlyn Toman (pole vault) and Hannah Patrick (javelin) all rank third in their respective events.
The Lehigh women placed fourth at this year's indoor championships back in February, with three women – Courtney Avery, Sarah Cassidy and Maura Henderson - taking home individual league titles. Henderson set new school records in the 3K and 5K at the championships, Avery won her fourth straight indoor high jump title, and Cassidy scored 3,511 points to win the pentathlon. In addition, the distance medley relay team of Marissa Karl, Rachel Okun, Clare Severe and Laura Barnes set a new school benchmark of 11:48.30.
"We're very excited to be hosting the Patriot League Championships," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Our team is really ready to go and I hope the weather holds off and we end up with a couple days of competition and sportsmanship."
