BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Vicky Lattanzio led the way for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks defeated Army West Point 5-3 at Leadership Park in their second game of the day in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks dropped their opening game Friday 14-7 to Boston University, but Lattanzio went 4-for-6 in the two games with nine RBI, including the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the seventh to cap the come-from-behind win over Army.
The Mountain Hawks (34-18) will now face Boston University in the championship round, needing to beat the Terriers twice to win the Patriot League title. Boston University (25-25 needs just one more win to claim the title.
"Vicky was lights out in that last game," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "Honestly, she put the team on her back and carried the team."
Freshman Mary-Hannah Smith, sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago, and junior Katie Schultz each added an RBI on the day, and junior Nicole Yozzo was the table setter at the leadoff spot going 3-for-6 with four runs scored.
In the elimination game against Army, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 3-0 after three innings on a Katie Ontiveros sacrifice fly in the second and a Smith throwing error that allowed two runs to score with two outs in the third.
It remained 3-0 until the fifth when Lehigh was finally able to break through. After two singles by Yozzo and senior Ashley Cole, and a walk to Smith to load the bases, Lattanzio rocketed a line drive over the center fielder's head to clear the bases and tie the game.
The game remained tied into the seventh as Yozzo drew a leadoff walk and later stole second. With two outs, Lattanzio drilled a 2-1 pitch over the right centerfield fence for her sixth home run of the
year, putting the Mountain Hawks in front.
Senior Christine Campbell shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, inducing a game-ending 6-6-3 double play to pick up her 20th win of the season. She went the distance, scattering seven hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking one.
Caroline Smith started for Army and allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. The Black Knights' season comes to an end at 36-21.
In the first game of the day, Lehigh matched up with Boston University in the winner's bracket game. The Mountain Hawks trailed 3-0 before coming to bat as Emma Wong cleared the bases with a three-run triple off sophomore Emily Sorem.
It remained 3-0 until the bottom of the third when Lehigh was able to scratch its way closer with two runs. Junior Rachel Timberman just missed her first home run of the season by hitting a triple off the top of the right-center field fence. Yozzo then reached on an infield single and subsequently stole second. Smith and Lattanzio then hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Boston lead to 3-2.
The Mountain Hawks came back in the fourth for two more runs to take the lead. Timberman walked, Cole singled and Smith reached on an error to load the bases for Lattanzio. The senior came through with a two-RBI single to give Lehigh the lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Terriers came right back in the fifth. Patriot League Player of the Year Jilee Schanda led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Boston University then loaded the bases on two singles and a walk for Emily Morrow who cleared the bases with a double to give the Terriers a 7-4 lead.
Boston University blew the game open in the sixth, scoring seven runs off freshman Parker Boyd to take a 14-4 lead. The Terriers sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied seven singles and two walks, while capitalizing on several Lehigh miscues to help put the game out of reach.
Lehigh was able to extend the game in the sixth scoring three runs with RBIs by Lattanzio, her fourth of the game, Rabago, and Schultz.
Boston University pitcher Makinna Akers was able to shut down Lehigh in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning, securing the victory and a spot in the championship round.
Sorem (11-8) took the loss for Lehigh, allowing seven runs on nine hits in five innings before Boyd threw the final two frames.
"This is very, very important to our kids," Troyan said. "It's almost too important. They played with a little pressure today. Emily (Sorem) made two bad pitches that resulted in six RBIs in the first game. We didn't play very well and they handed it to us.
Troyan added, "Whenever we end up playing, I'm confident that our hitters are going to hit and our pitchers are going to pitch better. It's going to be a great championship day."
Lehigh and Boston University will square off championship round Saturday at noon. If Lehigh wins, there will be winner-take-all rematch approximately 30 minutes after the first game is over. If Boston University wins the first game, the Terriers will be Patriot League champions for the third time in four seasons. All of the Patriot League Tournament action will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
