LEWISBURG, Pa. – On a day in which Lehigh pounded out 23 hits, the Mountain Hawks made their 13 in game two count. Lehigh clubbed three home runs in the nightcap to defeat Bucknell 10-2 in six innings Saturday at Becker Field. Junior Holly Lovett homered twice and sophomore Kelly Fricker added three hits, including a home run in the victory.
The Mountain Hawks dropped Saturday's first game 2-1 despite a 10-4 advantage in the hit column.
Lehigh is now 22-23 overall and 4-10 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell is 4-7 in league play and 7-30-1 overall.
Fricker led off game two with a double to right center and two batters later Lovett hit her third home run of the season out to left center giving Lehigh a 2-0 lead.
A Bucknell error in the second eventually turned into a pair of Lehigh runs with Fricker doubling home senior Abbey Tabaka and then junior Peyton Sward singling home Fricker to put Lehigh up 4-0.
Tabaka started a four-run, two-out rally in the third with a double. Two batters later, junior Gracie Smith doubled to left center, plating two runs, with Fricker following with a home run to straightaway center field, giving the Mountain Hawks an 8-0 advantage. The home run was Fricker's team-leading sixth of the season.
Senior Chloe Hess started in the circle and retired the first 10 Bison she faced before Bucknell picked up a two-out, two-run double in the fourth.
Lovett led off the sixth with her second home run of the game, becoming the first Mountain Hawk to record a two-homer game since first-year Megan Lodge hit two against Toledo on March 1. Senior Sydney Parlett scored Lehigh's 10th run on a wild pitch.
Hess worked around a one out single in the bottom of the sixth to close out her third victory of the season. She allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Fricker had three hits, while Sward, Lovett and Tabaka all had two in game two.
Game one saw Lehigh limited to one run on 10 hits. The Mountain Hawks left eight runners on base and failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
Tabaka broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Lizzie Kern, who reached on an error.
Lehigh's starting pitcher Addison Moorman set down the first nine Bison hitters before hitting Sarah Zimmerman to open the home fourth. Brooke Popella's two-out RBI double tied the game at 1-1 after four.
The Mountain Hawks totaled three hits across the fifth and sixth innings but could not push the go-ahead run across.
Zimmerman doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth and Haley Speicher tripled to right to bring her home with the go-ahead run.
Fricker doubled with one out in the seventh but was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game on a single by Sward. Avery powers then struck out Lovett to end the game.
Sward, Lovett and first-year Megan Lodge all had two hits in the opener.
Moorman had an identical line to Hess with two runs on four hits over six innings with no walks and three strikeouts, but came up on the short end.
Lehigh and Bucknell will wrap up their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
