BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the second straight season, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team came ever so close to handing Loyola its first-ever Patriot League defeat, but the Greyhounds came back from a 9-8 halftime deficit to defeat the Mountain Hawks (9-3, 4-2 Patriot League), 12-11 on Saturday afternoon. Loyola scored the go-ahead goal with 12:45 remaining, then neither side scored the rest of the way. Senior Allison LaBeau paced Lehigh's offense with five points behind two goals and three assists, marking her sixth straight game with five or more points.
Â
"It was a competitive game, but we're really disappointed to come out on the wrong side of the score," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We're a really competitive team. We're not willing to settle for a good effort anymore against Loyola."
Â
Junior Haley Wentzel scored a team-high three goals, and dished an assist. Senior Lauren Beausoleil had two goals, one assist, two groundballs and a caused turnover. Classmate Julianne D'Orazio finished with two goals, three draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Â
The Greyhounds, who have now won 31 straight Patriot League regular season games, held a 21-5 edge in draw controls, but the Lehigh defense helped the Mountain Hawks gain possession by causing 12 of Loyola's 16 turnovers. Sophomore Olivia Kelly led the way with a career-high four caused turnovers while adding a groundball and two draw controls.
Â
"We rely on our caused turnovers to make up for the difference if there's a dominant draw taker," said Redfern. "I think we did our job there. We just needed one more goal in that second half."
Â
The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. LaBeau got Lehigh on the scoreboard with 24:50 remaining in the half, sparking a 4-0 Mountain Hawks' run. LaBeau fed Beausoleil for a goal with 18:34 remaining, tying the score at four.
Â
Loyola responded with four of the next five goals to take an 8-5 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks ended the half on a 4-0 run. Goals from freshman Sondra Dickey, sophomore Courtney Henig, Wentzel and Beausoleil gave Lehigh a 9-8 lead at the half.
Â
"We knew our offensive looks well and we put those balls right up against the pipe or we redirected them low, which is something we worked on all week," said Redfern. "Our team bought into what they needed to do to score and they were successful."
Â
Lehigh's run extended to 5-0 behind a D'Orazio goal less than two minutes into the second, but Loyola came back with two straight to tie the score at 10. Wentzel gave Lehigh an 11-10 advantage with 24:42 remaining, but from there, only two goals were scored the rest of the way, both by Loyola. The Greyhounds scored with 20:09 and 12:45 remaining to take a 12-11 advantage. Lehigh had opportunities down the stretch, but Loyola goalkeeper Kady Glynn finished with three saves in that stretch, to clinch the Greyhounds' victory.
Â
Final shots were 30-27 in favor of Loyola while groundballs were even at 16. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt made 11 saves, her fifth double-digit save effort of the season. Glynn tallied 12 for the Greyhounds.
Â
Lehigh will now head to rival Lafayette in a midweek game on Wednesday, Apr. 19. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. in Easton.
