Lehigh Baseball to Host NJIT in Home Opening Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks will make their 2017 home debut this weekend with a four-game series against NJIT. Lehigh will host the Highlanders in a pair of doubleheaders, both starting at 12 p.m. after the decision was made to move Sunday's games from northern New Jersey to Bethlehem.

Lehigh (3-12) is looking to break out of a three-game skid which started with a pair off losses last Sunday to Manhattan and Seton Hall, followed by a loss at Penn on Tuesday. LU's last win was a 4-0 victory over North Dakota State on Mar. 15 in Florida. The win was the first shutout victory for Lehigh since 2015 (2-0 win against Iona).

The Mountain Hawks are batting .248 as a team this season with a slugging percentage of .405. Lehigh has jacked 17 home runs and ranks 24th nationally with 1.13 home runs per game. LU has six multi-home run games this season, which matches the total from last season.

Lehigh is fielding .950 as team and has turned 11 double plays. The Mountain Hawks own a 6.26 team earned-run average this season and a team WHIP of 1.8 while opponents are hitting .320.

Anthony Rinaldi leads the LU offense in many statistical categories with a .362 batting average and .621 slugging percentage. He owns a team-high 36 total bases with a team-leading seven doubles to lead the team with 21 total hits. Rinaldi is currently riding a seven-game hit streak.

Levi Stoudt, the reigning Patriot League Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, has been the top arm for the Brown and White this season and will make his home weekend debut. The freshman starter is 1-2 in five appearances this season and owns a 1.77 ERA. In 20.1 innings, Stoudt has struck out 20 batters to hold opposing hitters to a .268 batting average.

NJIT (3-14) is coming off a four-game series at James Madison last weekend where the Dukes took three out of the four games from the Highlanders. In addition to JMU, NJIT has wins over High Point and Chicago Sate this season.

The Highlanders are batting .236 as a team this season with a .321 slugging percentage. NJIT is averaging 3.88 runs per game on 7.76 hits per game with a total of seven home runs on the season. The Highlanders are 20-for-29 on stolen base attempts.

Defensively, NJIT is fielding .965 and has turned five double plays. The pitching staff owns a 7.06 ERA and a WHIP of 1.92 while holding opponents to a .307 batting average.

Evan Pietronico paces the Highlanders with a .333 batting average a .450 slugging percentage. He has accumulated a team-high 27 total bases with just five extra-base hits.

The Mountain Hawks and Highlanders will meet for the 14th time and first since 2014 when the two squads get together on Saturday for game one. Lehigh owns an 11-2 record all-time against NJIT since the first meeting in 2007.

LU is 1-1 against teams from New Jersey this season (Fairleigh Dickinson and Seton Hall) and 0-3 in Saturday games in 2017. The Highlanders are 2-7 in Saturday games and 2-12 in true road games.

The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their first win in a home opener since a 14-1 win over Mount St. Mary's in 2014. Lehigh is 5-5 in its last 10 home openers, including 1-0 record against NJIT.
