SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Manhattan jumped out to a comfortable 7-0 lead in the first inning, which set the table for a 16-0 victory over Leigh in game one Sunday at the Strikeout Cancer Classic hosted by Seton Hall. The host Pirates held the Mountain Hawk offense in check and earned a 3-0 victory in game two.
The Jaspers (3-11) put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning on seven hits and two Lehigh (3-10) errors. Manhattan started the inning with three-straight hits, including a double, which held up as the only extra-base hit in the first inning for the Jaspers. Manhattan had five runs on the board before the first out of the inning was recorded, which came on a sacrifice fly to left to knock in the sixth run.
Manhattan tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on just one hit and another pair of Mountain Hawk errors. Lehigh recorded two outs before committing errors on consecutive batters, which lead directly to both Jasper runs in the inning.
The Jaspers put runners across in the fifth and sixth innings before busting the lead wide open in the seventh. Manhattan posted four runs on five hits, highlighted by a two-run home run by the second batter in the inning.
The Mountain Hawks had nine batters reach base in the game on seven hits, including one extra-base hit. Lehigh put five runners in scoring position and left nine total runners stranded.
Manhattan's win snaps a four-game losing streak on the season and the Jaspers improve to 18-9 all-time against Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks have now been shut out by Manhattan in consecutive seasons.
Seton Hall (10-8) opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single after the leadoff batter reached and advanced to second due to a Lehigh (3-11) fielding error. The Mountain Hawks managed to limit the damage as Connor Donovan recorded a strikeout to end the inning and leave two Pirates stranded in scoring position.
A two-out walk in the sixth inning came back to bite Lehigh as Seton Hall followed up with a RBI double to right center and a RBI single through the right side to take a 3-0 lead. Matt Hand entered to pitch and recorded a strikeout to end the inning and strand a runner in scoring position.
The Mountain Hawks put 11 runners on base with 10 of those runners left stranded and had five runners in scoring position. Lehigh had two runners in scoring position in the fifth, but an inning-ending double play spoiled LU's best chance scoring opportunity of the game.
Lehigh will return to action Wednesday with a trip Pennsylvania. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Meiklejohn Stadium.
