Lehigh rowing kicks off spring season with success on the Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team kicked off the spring season with a busy schedule on Saturday, facing Temple, Loyola and Delaware on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh's women's and men's teams both faced Temple in the morning, then the women rowed against Patriot League foe Loyola in the afternoon while the men faced Loyola and Delaware. Highlighting the day for Lehigh was the women's team sweeping the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four against the Greyhounds.

The day proved a great opportunity to get experience under their belts. The morning racing was challenging, but the Mountain Hawks used the opportunity as a learning experience.

"The morning racing was a little tough against a respectable opponent," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I think we raced to our ability and we learned some things, which we were able to use in the afternoon."

The morning saw Lehigh's Women's Varsity Eight finish second (7:02.84), as did the Second Varsity Eight (7:12.96).

In the afternoon, the women's squad beat Loyola in the Varsity Eight (7:01.11), Second Varsity Eight (7:20.62) and Varsity Four (8:20.78). Facing Delaware and Loyola on the men's side, the Mountain Hawks came in second in the Varsity Eight (6:11.71) and Second Varsity Eight (6:30.27), while finishing first in the Varsity Four (7:20.35).

"One of our struggles in the morning was a lack of aggression in some boats compared to in practice," said Conley. "The team turned that around. There wasn't a boat in the afternoon that wasn't being aggressive. Throughout all the races today, we were composed, which was one of our goals for the weekend."

The Mountain Hawks return to the Schuylkill River next weekend when they compete in the Murphy Cup next Saturday, Mar. 25.

"I think both of the Varsity Eight boats really stepped up today," said Conley. "Seeing our top-end really show up ready to race and set a tone for what racing is about at Lehigh was great to see on opening day, and it filtered through the rest of the team."
