Lehigh Women Fall in Home Battle with Drexel

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team came up on the short end of a gritty battle with Drexel on Sunday afternoon inside the Lewis Tennis Center as the visiting Dragons left with a 5-2 victory. The Dragons improve to 4-1 on the season and earned their first road win of the season, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-2 having played both matches at home.

Drexel started off by claiming the first doubles win of the day as the pair of Honami Yazawa and Lea Winkler finished off Lehigh's Cassidy Cruz and Grace Lin with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. Lehigh battled back later in the doubles competition, picking up a big 6-4 win from Christina Auyeung and Jamie Campisi at No. 1 doubles. With the doubles point up for grabs, Drexel's duo of Ghita Benhadi and Kendra Bunch managed to edge out the freshman combo of Leigh Friedman and Sibel Can by a score of 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Auyeung scored another big win for Lehigh right out of the gates as the singles completion got underway. The junior All-Patriot League performer polished off Drexel's Benhadi by a score of 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

After surrendering a victory to Drexel at singles flight No. 4 and falling in three sets at flight No. 2, Lehigh got a lift from Lin at No. 3 singles to remain in contention for the win. Lin posted a 6-2 victory in the first set over Bunch, as Bunch claimed a 6-2 victory of her own in the second. Lin closed things out with another 6-2 victory in the third.

With a team win still up for grabs, the match moved to the No. 5 singles flight for a potential decision. In one of the more closely contested battles of the day, Drexel's Rodriguez Cruz posted a 6-4 victory in the first set over Cruz. In the second set, Cruz kept it tight and put forth a valiant effort, but was unable to keep pace with Rodriguez as the Dragon scored another 6-4 victory to win her match and clinch the victory for Drexel.

No. 6 singles also saw another spirited battle as Campisi and Anisiya Simpson played out the full three sets. Simpson managed to just edge out Campisi in the first set with a 7-5 victory, but the Lehigh senior stormed back with a 6-0 win in the second. In the end, Simpson utilized her powerful forehand to march on to a 6-3 victory in the third.

The Mountain Hawks will take a short break from competition and return to action on February 18 with home match against Stony Brook.
