Lehigh Men Cruise Past Rival Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, PA. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team extended its dual meet win streak to 26-straight over archrival Lafayette with a 219-80 victory in front of a capacity crowd of over 460 Friday night in Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks are now 4-3 overall this season, including a record of 2-1 against Patriot League opponents and are 3-1 at home this season.
Lehigh racked up 12 total victories on the night, 10 swimming, two diving, in addition to sweeping both relay events. Lehigh also lowered two Jacobs Pool records and one freshman record on the night.
Dean Shafritz, Tyler Christ, Jimmy Davey and Greg Giannella got things started with a win in the 200 medley relay at a pace of 1:33.05 and finished just 0.33 seconds off the Jacobs Pool record pace. Lehigh also took second as the foursome of Matt Feryo, Nico Lastauskas, Max Goldenberg and Kian O'Brien posted a time of 1:36.73.
Freshman Greg Gardner led Lehigh with a time of 9:36.42 in the 1000 to capture first place. Fellow freshman Collin Hanlon placed second with a time of 9:467.43.
Walker Wilson continued his dominance in the 200 freestyle and placed first with a winning time of 1:39.58, finishing just 0.24 seconds off the pool record pace. Kevin Fleck placed second with a time of 1:41.92.
Shafritz led Lehigh to a victory in the 100 bakcstroke as the Mountain Hawks claimed the top four spots. Shafritz touched the wall in 51.66, while Davey placed second (52.55), Feryo placed third (53.04) and Daniel Brooks came in fourth with an exhibition time of 54.33.
Zach Tieke led a trio of Mountain Hawks who swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. Tieke touched the wall in 21.02, while Giannella placed second (21.06) and Goldenberg placed third (21.71).
Making his collegiate debut, freshman diver Tyler Keller won the 1-meter dive with a score of 261.60, breaking the old freshman record of 255.90 set in 2005. Croldy Veliz placed second with a score of 233.55.
Tieke clinched his second victory of the night with a time of 45.94 in the 100 freestyle. He edged out Wilson in second (46.05) and Giannella in third (46.92).
Shafritz swept the backstroke events on the night as he paced the field with a time of 1:53.02 in the 200 backstroke. James Mauk touched the wall in 1:53.25 to placed second and Feryo came in third with a time of 1:53.40.
Lastauskas led Lehigh to victory in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.46. Christ placed second with a pace of 2:08.07.
Wilson captured his second victory of the night and did so in record-setting fashion. The sophomore touched the wall with a time of 4:30.67 in the 500 freestyle, breaking the old pool record mark of 4:34.95 set in 2014.
Tieke racked up his third win of the night as he touched the wall first with a time of 50.48 in the 100 butterfly. Goldenberg finished second with a time of 50.59.
Keller capped off his collegiate debut by sweeping the diving events on the night. The freshman placed first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 238.96. Veliz made it one-two for Lehigh once again as he placed second with a score of 217.80.
Davey closed out the individual events by leading a strong group of Mountain Hawks in the 100 IM. The senior touched the wall first with a time of 53.25 as Goldenberg came in second (53.70), Mauk placed third (53.84) and Christ came in fourth (54.50).
