QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up its fall season on Saturday with a strong day of racing at Class Day as part of the Head of the Halloween Regatta. The day included plenty of competition, including a costume contest and the actual racing. In the end, the seniors, led by boat captain Kyle Schipper, came out on top with the freshmen A boat coming in second.
"This is a fun event for the team," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We threw a monkey wrench at them in creating the race course as a big horseshoe, which is unusual. The coxswains handled the course very well, and at the end, it was the seniors who figured it out best and crossed the finish line first."
Competition was a theme of the day. The boats were mixed with both women's and men's rowers, with bragging rights on the line.
"It was great seeing how the whole team was really competitive with each other," said Conley. "There wasn't a massive margin between any of the boats, so it's telling me we're improving in terms of depth of the team. It was also great to see the young athletes step up. The freshmen really challenged the seniors a lot throughout the race. It's great to see there's no fear in terms competing against the upperclassmen."
Behind the seniors and the freshmen A boat came the sophomores A, juniors, freshmen B and sophomores B.
Saturday was the end of a successful fall season which began with the Lehigh Invitational and included Navy Day and the Head of the Charles.
"Moving forward, today sets us up to be in a pretty positive position heading into winter training, which is where our spring season is won or lost," said Conley. "Overall in the fall, we did a lot of learning about how to be competitive, how to be intense and when to bring the intensity. I think that will pay dividends for us down the road. There were some pretty hard lessons to learn, we learned them and now we're ready to apply them heading into the winter and spring."
