BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Just over two weeks into preseason practice and two weeks away from its season-opener, the Lehigh wrestling team will host its annual public Brown and White Wrestle-offs, Thursday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Â
Tenth-year head coach Pat Santoro and his staff have scheduled 12 tentative matchups, including two at each of the first three weight classes, with a mixture of established veterans and talented newcomers competing in front of the home fans for the first time this season.
Â
"It's always good to give the guys an early opportunity to wrestle in front of the home fans," Santoro said. "We'll have some guys who we plan to defer in there so that the fans can see some of our younger guys. It's been a very competitive room so far in practice. There are a lot of weight classes that are up in the air and may be for a while. This is just a first step as part of a longer process to figure out our lineup for the season."
Â
The projected card features an appearance by All-American Scott Parker and NCAA qualifiers Gordon Wolf and Ryan Preisch while six of Lehigh's true freshmen plus sophomore transfer Brandon Paetzell are slated to compete Thursday night.
Â
NCAA Champion Darian Cruz will not compete in the wrestle-offs as he prepares to compete at the NWCA All-Star Classic, Nov. 5 at Princeton but there will be two matches at 125 with true freshmen Matt Parker and Satoshi Abe squaring off and true freshman Luke Resnick set to meet deferred freshman Aaron Burkett.
Â
Scott Parker, coming off an eighth place NCAA finish and EIWA title at 133 will face deferred freshman Nick Farro, while Paetzell will face true freshman Brock Herring.
Â
The two bouts at 141 feature sophomore Ryan Pomrinca and deferred freshman Luke Karam in one and true freshmen Jimmy Hoffman and Dan Moran in the other.
Â
There is one bout scheduled at 149 through 197 with familiar veterans set to square off at both 157, as sophomore Kent Lane meets junior Ian Brown, and 165 as senior Drew Longo faces junior Gordon Wolf.
Â
The only weight class with no bout will be 285, where deferred freshman Jordan Wood is expected to start.
Â
"It's always good to wrestle in front of an audience and shake the nerves out for that first time out in Grace Hall," Santoro said. "Wrestle-offs are one of the hardest things to do. Competing against your teammate. No one likes to do it, but at the end of the day its competition. The guys just need to go out and focus on doing what they do best and put (the teammate aspect) aside for those seven minutes."
Â
The wrestle-offs get underway at 7 p.m. Thursday from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting LehighTickets.com. Tickets will also be available Thursday evening at Grace Hall.
Â
For fans unable to make Thursday's wrestle-offs, audio of the matches will be streamed online at Lehighsports.com/watch.
Following Thursday's wrestle-offs, Lehigh will open the dual season at EIWA rival Bucknell, Friday Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and will then compete in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday Nov. 12. Lehigh will open its home schedule with duals versus Edinboro (Nov. 17) and Michigan (Nov. 19) inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
