Lehigh Earns Three Wins at 25th John Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team had three individual wins on Saturday at the 25th Annual John Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse. Freshman Brooke Schaeffer, senior Ashley Strysko and junior Laura Barnes all earned wins at the Covert, while Hanna Brosky, Stephanie Hayes, Courtney Wu, Caity Reverand and the 4x800 relay team all earned runner-up finishes. Lehigh also had several participants down in West Virginia at the Thundering Herd Invitational.
Iman Mosley (27.22) led the Mountain Hawks in both the 200m dash with a sixth place finish, and added a 10th place finish in the 60m dash. Mariah Kozub and Noreen Byrne finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the 60m hurdles, with Kozub setting a new personal record of 9.50 seconds.
Schaeffer took home the top prize in the 400m dash with her winning time of 1:00.10, just ahead of teammate Rachel Okun (1:01.51) who finished in fourth place. Freshman Mary Casey finished third in the 500m dash with Erin Racano (1:20.84) and Sophie Antonioli (1:21.06) finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Brosky and Kristen Lavallee both had solid races in the 800m with Brosky (2:16.34) finishing runner-up and Lavallee (2:19.73) finishing fourth. It was a Lehigh sweep atop the 1,000m run with Barnes winning the race in 3:01.21 and Hayes (3:04.43) taking second overall. In the 3,000m run, Brenna Clark (10:44.63) finished fourth out of 30 runners.
Strysko picked up her first win of the season with a 18:37.97 final time in the 5K, and Marissa Karl raced to a third place time of 5:11.60 in the mile run. Stacie Nadel landed in the top 10 of the mile as well, finishing ninth out of 35 runners in 5:35.47.
In the relay, LU's 4x400 team (Racano, Casey, Hilary McElwain, Sophie Antonioli) finished fifth and the 4x800 relay team (Okun, Hayes, Schaeffer, Sarah Boyer) took second.
In the field events, Olivia Reinold finished tied for third in the high jump at 1.55m, and Kiana Wright (4th/5.26m) and Courtney Wu (6th/5.19m) were LU's top placers in the long jump. Armani Comick also cracked the long jump's top 10 at 4.95m, just one centimeter shy of her PR. Wu (11.16m) led the way for Lehigh in the triple jump by finishing second overall, and Kiana Wright (11.06m) finished fourth. Lehigh earned another runner-up finish from Reverend in the pole vault, who tied her PR at 3.35m.
In the throws, Amanda Youngblood (16.33m) and Paige Grossman (14.87m) finished third and fourth, respectively in the weight throw. Youngblood was Lehigh lone representative in the 35-person shot put, where she finished fourth (13.35m).
Down at Marshall's Thundering Herd Invite, fresh off her school record pole vault last weekend, Kaitlyn Toman placed ninth overall on Friday by clearing the bar at 3.50 meters. On Saturday, Courtney Avery placed third in the high jump at 1.70m. Senior Sarah Cassidy competed in the pentathlon and finished third overall with 3,392 points, highlighted by tying for first in the event's shot put (11.82m) and a fifth place showing in the 800m.
Lehigh's next meet will be next Friday-Saturday at the Armory Track Invitational in New York City, and the Villanova Invitational next Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex.
