Women's Tennis Opens Spring with Setback Against Iowa State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team opened its 2017 spring schedule on Sunday with a 6-1 opening day setback at home to Iowa State inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Cyclones improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Mountain Hawks start the season 0-1.

Iowa State began with back-to-back 6-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles to earn the doubles point. The pairing Cassidy Cruz and Grace Lin represented Lehigh at No. 3 doubles and played out a spirited battle before falling 6-4 to Iowa State's Regina Espindola and Karen Alvarez.

In the singles competition, Lehigh began with an early win at flight No. 2. Iowa State's Maty Cancini retired after the first set, conceding the victory to Sibel Can to give the freshman her first collegiate dual match victory.

The Cyclones would proceed to not surrender another match or even a set from that point on. Erin Freeman's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Grace Lin at No. 3 singles clinched the overall match victory for the visitors.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the courts and remain at home when they face Drexel at 11 a.m. next Sunday. Lehigh's next match will begin a four-match home stand through the month of February as plenty of action is on tap at the Lewis Tennis Center.
