BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off its first win of the 2016 season, Lehigh returns to Goodman Stadium Saturday to host Princeton on Youth Sports Day, in the second of three consecutive games for the Mountain Hawks against Ivy League opponents. The Mountain Hawks dominated the second half of their win at Penn, breaking a 28-28 tie by outscoring the Quakers 21-0, while limiting the hosts to just 67 yards of offense. Senior Nick Shafnisky accounted for 388 yards and a career-best six touchdowns, while a six-yard run by sophomore Micco Brisker gave Lehigh the lead for good.
Following a 5-5 campaign a season ago, Princeton opened its 2016 season with a 35-31 home win over Lafayette. The Tigers started 4-0 last year before dropping five of their final six games. Princeton trailed three times against Lafayette but used a 21-3 run to take control before holding off a late Leopards comeback attempt. All five Princeton touchdowns came on the ground with Joe Rhattigan scoring three and backup quarterback John Lovett adding two. Chad Kanoff returns as Princeton's starting quarterback. Luke Catarius led the Tiger defense with 13 tackles and a sack. Four-year starter Dorian Williams captains the Princeton defense from his safety spot. Princeton was picked fifth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll.
Shafnisky enjoyed one of the finest games of his career last week at Penn, accounting for 388 yards of total offense and a career-best six touchdowns. Shafnisky established a new career-high with 28 completions and threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 71 yards and three touchdowns. He was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career. Shafnisky came into his own last year, competing nearly 67 percent of his passes for 2,279 yards and 15 touchdowns, while adding 674 yards and a team-best 12 touchdowns on the ground. The MVP of last year's Lehigh-Lafayette game, Shafnisky now owns five career 300-yard passing games and a pair of 100-yard rushing games. He has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes in 2016 and has five passing and five rushing touchdowns so far this season.
One of the main reasons for Lehigh's offensive improvement over the last two weeks has been its ability to move the chains. After tallying just 15 first downs against Monmouth, Lehigh gained 24 against Villanova and 34 against Penn. The Mountain Hawks also converted an impressive 12-of-17 third downs against the Quakers. At 57.5 percent, Lehigh ranks third nationally in third down conversions. Lehigh has also gained the eighth-most first downs with 73 through three games. The Mountain Hawks had second-half scoring drives covering 90 and 97 yards in their win at Penn.
After conceding 28 first half points to Penn, Lehigh's defense turned things around in the second half against the Quakers. The Mountain Hawks allowed just 67 yards of offense to Penn after halftime, while keeping the Quakers off the scoreboard. This marked the first time Lehigh shut out a team in a half since the Mountain Hawks held Cornell scoreless in the first half of their game on October 18, 2014. The last time Lehigh shut a team out in the second half was on November 17, 2012, when the Mountain Hawks shut out rival Lafayette over the final three quarters of a 38-21 victory.
Ed Mish enjoyed a strong freshman season as Lehigh's kicker, converting 40 of his 43 extra point attempts and going 9-for-12 on field goals, with a long of 43 yards against Holy Cross. Mish has converted all 13 of his extra points so far this season, including a 7-for-7 effort against Penn. He was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career for his efforts. Mish has also taken over the punting duties for Lehigh, averaging 45.2 yards on 10 punts with three placed inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
College football coaches around the country, including Lehigh's Andy Coen will once again be joining the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. By wearing an arm band with the Coach to Cure MD insignia, coaches will show their support for Coach to Cure MD, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) charitable project. This is the ninth consecutive year of the Coach to Cure MD project, with Coen's Lehigh teams being regular participants.
Lehigh meets Princeton for the 59th time with the Tigers leading the series 40-16-2. The Mountain Hawks have won 12 of the past 16 matchups, with the Tigers snapping a four-game Lehigh winning streak with a victory last year in New Jersey. These two teams met for the first time in 1887. Andy Coen is 5-4 versus Princeton.
Saturday's game kicks off just after 12:30 from Goodman Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and may be purchased in one of three ways: by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Stabler Arena, by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line anytime at LehighTickets.com.
Lehigh concludes its stretch of three straight games against Ivy League opponents when the Mountain Hawks visit the Yale Bowl next Saturday to face Yale. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to avenge back-to-back losses to the Bulldogs in each of the last two seasons. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. in what will be Lehigh's final non-league game of the regular season.
