BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will head to Saint Peter's Wednesday afternoon for its final midweek game of the regular season at 3:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have added a home twinbill against Immaculata to their schedule for Saturday in preparations for the upcoming Patriot League Semifinals. Lehigh and the Mighty Macs will play two nine-inning games at Legacy Park.
The Mountain Hawks carry a 21-27 overall record into Wednesday's contest at Saint Peter's and are coming off a 2-1 series win at Army over the weekend. The series victory and results from around the Patriot League allowed Lehigh to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks will be making their third-straight trip to the postseason when Lehigh travels to second-seeded Holy Cross May 14-15 for a best-of-three semifinal series. The winner will advance to the Patriot League Championship May 21-22 to take on the winner of No. 1 Navy vs. No. 4 Bucknell. Starting pitchers Kevin Long and Peter Moore earned wins on the mound at Army, while senior Kevin Boswick secured two saves in Lehigh's two victories against the Black Knights. Senior Mike Garzillo recorded four RBI throughout the series and became Lehigh's all-time career hits leader with the 230th hit of his career in Sunday's finale.
Garzillo leads Lehigh for the season with a .322 batting average and league-best marks in both runs scored (45) and slugging percentage (.559). Junior Patrick Donnelly leads the Patriot League with 45 RBI. The Mountain Hawks are hitting .276 as a team, led by Garzillo, Jacen Nalesnik (.315), David Young (.315) and Donnelly (.302). Sophomore Mark Washington is expected to get the start on the mound Wednesday at Saint Peter's. Washington leads Lehigh with a season-long ERA of 2.37 and the righty holds a 4-1 record. His last start came against rival Lafayette on April 24 where he let up just three hits in 6.1 scoreless frames.
Saint Peter's carries an 8-32 overall record into Wednesday's 3:30 p.m. contest. The Peacocks are coming off their first conference series win over the season as SPU was able to earn a 2-1 series victory at Marist over the weekend. Saint Peter's will play a 1 p.m. Tuesday game at Rutgers before welcoming Lehigh Wednesday. Jon Kristoffersen leads the Peacocks in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.314), RBI (18), runs scored (27) and home runs (5). Rob Moore has also chipped in 18 RBI while hitting .303. Saint Peter's is expected to send Nick Arre to the hill Wednesday. Arre has made three starts in seven appearances and holds an 0-2 record with a 10.03 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched.
Lehigh and Saint Peter's met earlier this season when the Mountain Hawks used a five-run third inning and dominant pitching performance from Moore to capture a 6-3 win over the Peacocks at Legacy Park on March 30.
Following Wednesday's game in Jersey City, N.J., Lehigh will welcome Immaculata to Legacy Park for a 12 p.m. Saturday doubleheader. The Mountain Hawks will then begin preparations for the Patriot League Semifinals at Holy Cross May 14-15.
