Lehigh Ready for Annual Showdown with Lafayette

4/8/2016 11:46:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field

Meet Schedule | Live Results | Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams are set for one of the most anticipated weekends of the regular season as they will travel to Easton on Sunday for the annual dual meet against rival Lafayette. The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, will now be held on Sunday due to expected inclement weather. Lehigh will be going for a men's and women's season sweep over the Leopards in cross country, and both indoor and outdoor track for the first time since the 2011-12 academic year, a feat also accomplished in 2010-11. Both Lehigh squads have split the outdoor dual meet in each of the last three seasons.

The Mountain Hawk men hold a 17-9 mark in the outdoor dual meet series since 1990, including wins in four of the last five seasons, while the women are 7-17 during that timeframe, while winning three of the last five.

"In 1881, Lehigh defeated Lafayette in the first ever dual meet between the two schools," head coach Matt Utesch said. "Everyone who's been alive from then until now looks at our results from this particular meet. We have an opportunity to win six times (including cross country and indoor track) against Lafayette this year, and that doesn't happen very often. Our goal is to make history. We owe it to our alumni, the university to our team and friends. Our goal is to win it," he said.

This marks the fourth weekend of outdoor action for the Mountain Hawks. After split squad action through the first two weeks, the full team took part in last weekend's unscored Muhlenberg Spring Invitational. The meet featured eight wins on the women's side from Gabrielle Wardle (high jump), Kiana Wright (triple jump), Nia Baker (shot put) and Amanda Youngblood (discus) in field events, plus Wardle (100h), Noreen Byrne (400h), Tyler Scanlin (1500m) and the 4x100 relay team on the track.

Scott Mason (3000 steeple), Seamus Cullinane (800m), Daniel Reichenbach (triple jump) Lucas Warning (shot put) and Tyler John (pole vault) all earned wins for the men's team at Muhlenberg.

Lehigh has received contributions from a wide number of athletes with 11 men/relay teams combining for the team's 12 individual wins this outdoor season, with the women getting 19 wins so far from nine different athletes plus the 4x100 relay team.

This weekend's rivalry matchup will be the second time this season the Mountain Hawks will compete on Lafayette's home track. Two weeks ago, both Lehigh teams captured first place at the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational, with the men earning six individual wins and seven runner-up performances. The women also won seven events en route to a victory at the meet, which also included fellow Patriot League foes, Colgate and Lafayette.

Sunday's meet will get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the pole vault taking place inside the Kirby Sports Center. All other events will take place at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex with field events starting at 11:30 a.m. and track events at 12:30 p.m. A full meet schedule is available by clicking here.
