Lehigh hosts archrival Lafayette in four-game weekend series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team looks to keep itself in the playoff hunt this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host rival Lafayette for a four-game Patriot League series at Legacy Park. Doubleheaders will be played Saturday and Sunday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. both days. The program's six seniors will be honored prior to the start of Sunday's doubleheader on Senior Day and free video of all four games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks will be aiming to gain some ground in the Patriot League standings after starting the league slate with a 3-9 record that is part of a 14-26 overall mark. Lehigh has dropped 3-1 series to the top three teams in the league standings in Bucknell, Holy Cross and Navy. The Mountain Hawks picked up a victory in game two of each series.
Senior Mike Garzillo leads Lehigh with a .336 batting average and 37 runs scored. Garzillo is also hitting a team-best .415 in Patriot League play. Juniors David Young (.319), Jacen Nalesnik (.312) and Patrick Donnelly (.300) hold season-long batting averages at or above .300. Donnelly has knocked in a squad-high 36 runs, 11 of which have come against league opponents. Sophomore James Bleming is hitting .326 in league action.
Sophomores Sam Ashey and Mark Washington, senior Kevin Long, junior Matt Kozemchak and freshman Ethan Frohman has all started league games on the mound for Lehigh this season. Washington leads the team with a season-long 3.00 ERA, while he, Ashey and sophomore Peter Moore have picked up three wins apiece. Moore holds a 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched against league opponents and he picked up the Mountain Hawks' most recent Patriot League win in a 9-2 decision at Navy last Saturday. Moore leads the team with 29 strikeouts, while Long follows with 28.
Lafayette currently sits in fourth place in the Patriot League standings with a 6-6 league mark that is part of a 13-22 overall record. The Leopards took three of four from Army to open the league slate before dropping a 3-1 series to Navy. Lafayette split a 2-2 series with Bucknell last weekend in its most recent Patriot League action before earning a 13-12 win over visiting Monmouth Wednesday in non-league play.
Michael Coniglio leads the Leopards with a .345 batting average, 33 runs scored and 23 stolen bases. Steven Cohen follows with a .323 average and a team-best 27 RBI. Campbell Lipe is hitting .344 in Patriot League play. The Leopards are expected to turn to David Bednar (3-3, 3.78 ERA), Mitch Leeds (2-2, 6.06 ERA), John Cain (1-4, 5.45 ERA) and Trevor Houck (1-2, 5.68 ERA) as the starting pitchers this weekend. Ryan Callanan leads the Leopard bullpen with three saves, two of which have come in Patriot League action.
Lehigh took a 3-1 series from Lafayette in Easton last season. The Mountain Hawks swept Saturday's doubleheader with 5-4 and 4-2 wins before dropping Sunday's opener 3-0. Lehigh rebounded with a 5-3, 10-inning win in the Sunday nightcap to secure the series victory and No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
Following this weekend's rivalry series, Lehigh will remain home Tuesday to host Iona in midweek action before travelling to Army next weekend to close out Patriot League play.
