Lehigh travels to UMES for Wednesday doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will wrap up a six-game road swing Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks head to UMES for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Hawk Stadium.
The Mountain Hawks carry a 14-24 overall record into the midweek twinbill. Lehigh is coming off a 1-3 weekend at Navy. The Mountain Hawks won the second game of the series by a score of 9-2 Saturday afternoon with the help of five RBI from junior Patrick Donnelly and six strong innings of relief work from sophomore Peter Moore.
Senior Mike Garzillo leads Lehigh offensively with a .343 batting average. Garzillo holds league-leading marks in slugging percentage (.579) and runs scored (36). Donnelly leads the Lehigh bats with 35 RBI, while junior Jacen Nalesnik (25) and Garzillo (24) follow. Junior David Young is hitting .321 with a team-best 13 doubles. Lehigh will hand the ball to freshman Cole McManimon for game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at UMES, while the Mountain Hawks' game two starter is to be determined. McManimon has made three starts in nine appearances this season, striking out 18 batters in 18.1 innings of action. Several other Lehigh pitchers are expected to see action in the midweek matchups.
UMES is 9-25 overall this season and the Hawks will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak. UMES was swept in a MEAC weekend series at Norfolk State in its most recent action. Mike Escanilla leads the team with a .309 batting average, while Connor Breslin follows with a mark of .269 to pace a UMES squad that is hitting .239 as a team. Jessey Valdez has knocked in a team-best 25 RBI, while Jordan Martin leads the Hawks with 24 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. Will Turley (3-2, 10.95 ERA) will toe the rubber for game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, while J.P. Black (1-3, 13.28 ERA) is expected to get the start in game two. Turley and Black have combined to make 25 appearances on the mound this season. UMES has played two games against a Patriot League team this season, as the Hawks fell 11-2 and 16-4 to Navy in midweek action.
Lehigh is 4-0 against MEAC teams this year as the Mountain Hawks swept a season-opening series at Norfolk State (10-3, 7-2, 7-6) and picked up a midweek win against Coppin State (10-4). Lehigh holds a 22-3 all-time advantage over UMES. The teams split the most recent meetings on April 16, 2014 as Lehigh earned a 6-3 win in the opener of a midweek doubleheader before UMES came back to claim an 11-3 win in the nightcap.
Following Wednesday's action, Lehigh will return home to host archrival Lafayette in a four-game Patriot League series Saturday and Sunday at Legacy Park.
