ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh baseball team dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader at first-place Navy as the Mids captured 3-0 and 10-3 wins to sweep the twinbill. The Mountain Hawks fall to 14-24 overall and 3-9 in league action and Navy improves to 29-10-1 overall and 8-4 against Patriot League foes.
"Navy executed really well this weekend and I give them a lot of credit," said head coach Sean Leary. "Kevin Long threw the ball really well today and came up with a great performance, but the Navy pitcher out-dueled us today. We still control our own destiny and if we play well against our final two league opponents we'll be able to keep ourselves in the hunt for the postseason."
Senior Kevin Long threw a complete game in the day's opener and finished with a line three runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits with a season-best seven strikeouts. The Mountain Hawks pounded out 10 hits in the second game, led by senior Mackey Price who went 3-for-4 at the plate. Junior Jacen Nalesnik recorded a solo home run and recorded two hits in the two games combined. Nalesnik and sophomores Ryan Bonshak and James Bleming recorded each recorded an RBI.
The Mids took an early lead in the day's opener, a seven-inning contest, as Robert Currie knocked a leadoff double before later scoring on a wild pitch and Lehigh throwing error to give Navy a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. The Mids then added on a run in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI double from Adrian Chinnery before scoring an unearned run in the following frame to take a 3-0 lead through four frames.
Lehigh put two runners on base in the top of the fifth, but Navy starter Noah Song was able to work out of trouble. The Mids didn't get anything else off Long who threw all six innings for the Mountain Hawks, but the Lehigh bats couldn't get going as Navy earned a 3-0 win.
Navy got on the board right away in the series finale, a nine-inning affair, thanks to two singles and a failed pickoff attempt that gave the Mids a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks answered in the top of the second as junior David Young reached base on a Navy error before singles from junior Connor Donovan and Price loaded the bases with one out. Bonshak and Bleming then drew RBI walks to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
The Mids then put up seven runs in the next two frames thanks to six hits and a Lehigh error to jump ahead 8-2 through three innings. A two-out solo home run from Nalesnik got a run back for the Mountain Hawks in the top of the fourth to put the score at 8-3. Navy added two runs in the bottom of the fifth before Donovan and senior Brandon Kulp kept the Mids off the board the rest of the way, but the Lehigh bats weren't able to get back in the game as Navy earned a 10-3 win. Lehigh freshman starter Ethan Frohman suffered the loss after surrendering six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. Navy reliever Andrew Bartek earned the win, while Sam Sorenson picked up the three-inning save.
Lehigh returns to action Wednesday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at UMES before returning home to host archrival Lafayette next weekend.
