BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team faces a tough test this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to preseason favorite Navy for a key Patriot League series. Doubleheaders are set for 12 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday from Navy's Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium and free video of Sunday's action will be available on the Patriot League Network. The two teams will be meeting for the first time since last season's Patriot League Championship series when the Mountain Hawks won a dramatic three-game series to capture their second-ever league crown and punch Lehigh's ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
The Mids are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the tightly-packed Patriot League standings as Navy, Holy Cross and Bucknell are all 5-3 with two of five league series complete. Lafayette follows with a 4-4 record, while Army (3-5) and Lehigh (2-6) look to move up in the standings this weekend.
Lehigh carries a 13-21 overall record into this weekend's series at Navy. The Mountain Hawks dropped 3-1 series to Bucknell and Holy Cross to open the league slate as Lehigh won the second game of each series. In its most recent league set against the Crusaders last weekend, Lehigh fell 6-1 in game one before coming back for a 5-4 walk-off win in the Sunday nightcap thanks to a game-winning RBI single from junior John Scarr. Holy Cross then claimed Monday's 13-inning opener by a score of 5-4 before using a trio of three-run home runs to capture a 12-3 win in the nightcap. In Lehigh's most recent action Tuesday in a non-league game against Rider, senior Mike Garzillo hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to knot the score at 8-8 before delivering the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 9-8 extra-inning win.
Garzillo leads Lehigh for the season with a .352 batting average and 34 runs scored. The senior has hit .483 so far in Patriot League action while slugging .897 with a .559 on-base percentage. Donnelly leads the team with 30 RBI, while Garzillo and Nalesnik follow with 24. Sophomore James Bleming holds a .270 season-long batting average, but has hit .367 against Patriot League opponents.
Sophomore Sam Ashey and senior Kevin Boswick have earned Lehigh's two league wins on the mound. Ashey, Washington, senior Kevin Long, junior Matt Kozemchak and freshman Ethan Frohman have all made league starts, while the Lehigh bullpen has turned to Boswick and Donovan.
Navy is 26-9-1 overall this season and 5-3 in Patriot League play. The Mids opened league action by splitting a 2-2 series with Holy Cross. Navy then took the first three games of a four-game set at Lafayette last weekend before capturing a 16-4 win at Delaware State in midweek action Wednesday. The second-seeded Mountain Hawks then traveled to top-seeded Navy in May for the Patriot League Championship series. Lehigh opened its title run with a 7-3 game-one win before the Mids earned a 9-8, 11-inning victory in game two.
