BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a tough 11-10 defeat to No. 13/15 Loyola Saturday, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team quickly returns to action when the Mountain Hawks travel to Princeton on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. showdown. Lehigh and Princeton have played a pair of thrilling games in each of the last two seasons. Two years ago, the Tigers won a 10-9 double overtime thriller while last season, Lehigh won a 16-15 shootout.
Â
On Saturday, Lehigh led the Greyhounds 9-7 in the third quarter, but fell just short of beating a ranked opponent for a second straight game. A game of runs saw Loyola use a 4-1 run to take a 6-3 lead before the Mountain Hawks came back with six of the next seven goals from midway through the second quarter until late in the third. The Greyhounds responded with a 4-0 run and senior Alex Eaton scored with 3:55 remaining to pull Lehigh within one, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't get any closer. Eaton had a good look in the final minute, but Loyola goaltender Jacob Stover made his 14th save of the game to preserve his team's win.
Â
Senior Reid Weber led Lehigh's offense with four goals and one assist, good for his 18th career hat trick (and seventh this season) while senior Ray Mastroianni scored twice and senior Billy Oppenheimer recorded a goal and two assists. The Mountain Hawks are still searching for their first-ever win against Loyola, but have been close each of the past two seasons. Last year, the game was tied heading into the fourth quarter while Saturday's one-goal margin was the smallest margin in the all-time series.
Â
Defensively, freshman Craig Chick recorded three groundballs and two caused turnovers, also winning 2-of-4 faceoffs. Classmate Eddie Bouhall was especially strong on the faceoff wing, setting a career-high five groundballs while also causing a turnover. Senior Tripp Telesco had a groundball and caused turnover to reach 24 caused turnovers this season and 91 in his career. Weber's four goals give him 96 for his career. In goal, freshman Chris Kiernan was solid, making 10 saves, including stopping four-of-five sent his way in the third quarter. Lehigh won 9-of-24 faceoffs against a strong opponent in Graham Savio, highlighted by the Mountain Hawks winning 5-of-7 in the second quarter.
Â
The loss was Lehigh's third straight at home, all coming against ranked foes. Despite the defeat, the Mountain Hawks clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth for a sixth straight season due to Colgate's loss to Navy. Lehigh can still finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in the standings. With a win next Friday at Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks would be the No. 4 seed and host a Patriot League Quarterfinal contest for the second time in the last three years.
Â
Before next Friday's regular season finale, Lehigh plays a pair of perennial Ivy League powers in Princeton and Cornell. Following Tuesday's game, the Mountain Hawks host the Big Red on Senior Day Saturday. The game will be played at Goodman Stadium and will be televised on CBS Sports Network with a 2:30 p.m. opening faceoff.
Â
Princeton is in the midst of a tough season, standing 2-7 overall. The Tigers' wins have come against NJIT and Rutgers while they've lost a number of competitive games against quality opponents, including last time out when they dropped a 13-10 final to No. 8 Stony Brook. Ryan Ambler leads the team in scoring with 31 points behind 13 goals and a team-leading 18 assists. Zach Currier owns 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) while Austin Sims (team-leading 17 goals, two assists) and Gavin McBride (13 goals, six assists) have 19 points apiece. Currier also leads the team in groundballs (56) and caused turnovers (14) while taking 92 faceoffs (second on the team) and winning 40 of them. Tyler Blaisdell has started all nine games in goal and owns a 13.26 GAA and .396 save percentage. Princeton's defense has struggled this season, allowing 13.22 goals per game with four teams reaching 17 or more goals. The Tigers are shooting 32.7 percent as a team this season, but are allowing opponents to shoot 37.9 percent.
Â
Lehigh's thrilling 16-15 win over Princeton last season marked the program's second-ever win against the Tigers and first since 1890. Princeton leads the all-time series, 14-2-1, but Tuesday will mark just the third meeting since 1940. Two years ago, Lehigh dropped a 10-9 double overtime heartbreaker at Princeton. The schools first met in 1888, a 3-1 Princeton win. Lehigh won in 1890 by a 3-1 final and the teams also tied in 1926. Overall, Princeton has won 12 of the last 13 meetings.
Â
Following Tuesday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home for the final regular season home game on Saturday. Lehigh welcomes Cornell at 2:30 p.m. in Goodman Stadium. The game will be nationally-televised on CBS Sports Network.
