WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Dartmouth scored the final four runs of the game Sunday afternoon to capture a 5-4 win over the Lehigh baseball team in the Mountain Hawks' Spring Break finale at the RussMatt Invitational. Lehigh falls to 5-11 on the season with the loss, while Dartmouth improves to 2-9.
"We saw their ace today and I thought our offense did a good job getting runs off a high-quality pitcher," said head coach Sean Leary. "Our pitchers battled well today and it was a well-played game all around. We played well in some really competitive games while in Florida and saw a lot of great things to build upon once we return home."
All four of Lehigh's runs were scored by way of the long ball, as senior Mike Garzillo's three-run home run and junior Jacen Nalesnik's solo shot put four runs on the board for the Mountain Hawks. Nalesnik and junior David Young both recorded two hits in the game.
For the second time in as many games, Nalesnik led off the contest with a solo home run to left center to give the Mountain Hawks, the designated visiting team, a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Dartmouth was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning as a leadoff single was followed by a hit by pitch and an RBI single from Justin Fowler, but Lehigh junior starter Matt Kozemchak was able to strand a pair of Big Green runners on second and third to limit the damage.
Lehigh quickly countered in the top of the third as Nalesnik and Young sent back-to-back one-out single through the left side before Garzillo sent his second home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 4-1.
The Big Green used a leadoff double and one-out RBI single to get a run back in the bottom of the third. Dartmouth loaded the bases with one out, but Kozemchak got a pair of fly outs to end the threat and keep Lehigh's lead at 4-2 through three frames. Big Green starter Duncan Robinson kept Lehigh off the board for the next two innings before Dartmouth used a leadoff double and one-out RBI single to cut Lehigh's lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Connor Donovan took the mound in relief of Kozemchak with one out in the fifth and got the Big Green to ground into a double play to end the inning.
A hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt and RBI single helped Dartmouth tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Donovan fired a scoreless seventh before sophomore Peter Moore took the mound in the eighth. A one-out hit by pitch was followed by a groundout that moved Dartmouth's Ben Socher to second before a Dustin Shirley RBI single plated the go-ahead run.
Lehigh put the tying run on third with one out in the top of the ninth, but Robinson retired the next two Mountain Hawks to secure his complete game win and the 5-4 victory for Dartmouth.
Kozemchak finished with a line of three earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Moore suffered the loss.
The Mountain Hawks return home to host three games this week at Legacy Park, beginning with a 3 p.m. Tuesday contest against NYIT.
