Mountain Hawks drop 5-2 decision to unbeaten Drexel

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team suffered as 5-2 loss to a tough Drexel squad Saturday afternoon inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Freshman Grace Lin and sophomore Briana Maravich earned Lehigh's points with singles victories. The Mountain Hawks fall to 0-2 on the young season, while the Dragons remain undefeated and improve to 3-0.
"We got outplayed in doubles and started flat, but found our groove later on against an athletic and aggressive Drexel squad," said head coach Wouter Hendrix. "Unfortunately it was too late at that time. Maravich had a hard fought win and came back from 2-5 in the third. Cruz played amazing and had match point against one of the top players in the Northeast, yet came up short. Lin was able to grind out a strong victory."
Drexel was able to claim all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. In singles play, Drexel's Lea Winkler beat junior Jamie Campisi in the fourth flight before Cassidy Cruz dropped a tough 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 decision to Honami Yazawa at the top flight. Drexel's Kendall Bunch picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over sophomore Abby Duddy before Lin and Maravich were able to put Lehigh on the board.
Lin moved to 2-0 in singles play on the season as she earned an exciting 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Drexel's Clary Rodriguez Cruz at the second flight. Maravich followed with a thrilling 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win over Erin Bowsher to notch Lehigh's second point. The Dragons claimed the match's final point as sophomore Kirstin Godau fell 8-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action Sunday at 10 a.m. when Lehigh hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
