Mountain Hawks fall 5-2 in season-opener against Delaware

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team was edged by visiting Delaware 5-2 Wednesday evening in the season-opener inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Freshman Grace Lin won matches in both doubles and singles in her varsity debut.
"This was a humbling experience against a much-improved Delaware team that deserves a lot of credit for the way they played," said head coach Wouter Hendrix. "We have a lot of work to do, but I am convinced we will get better and sharper in our execution as we get more matches under our belt. Our team is excited for the challenges that await us on Saturday and Sunday against Drexel and Saint Francis."
Delaware claimed the doubles point as the Blue Hens picked up a 6-4 win over sophomore Christina Auyeung and junior Jamie Campisi in the top flight and 6-3 decision over junior Cassidy Cruz and sophomore Briana Maravich in the second flight. Lin and sophomore Kirstin Godau were able to defeat Delaware's Annie Jaskulski and Draga Sabotic 7-5 in the third flight.
Lin followed her doubles performance with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Delaware's Denny LaMachia to earn Lehigh's first singles point in the second flight. Campisi picked up an exciting 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 win over Sarah Hall in No. 5 singles to earn Lehigh's second point. Auyeung was defeated in a three-set heartbreaker in the top flight of singles, while Cruz, Maravich and sophomore Abby Duddy also fell in singles action.
The Mountain Hawks return to the courts this weekend when Lehigh hosts Drexel Saturday (11 a.m.) and Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday (10 a.m.) inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
