BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong start to the season, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns home on Saturday to host Holy Cross in the Patriot League opener for both sides. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. as the first game of a Lehigh Lacrosse doubleheader, with the women squaring off against Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off two straight road contests in the Carolinas, beginning with a tight 13-11 defeat at No. 3 Duke followed by an impressive 15-7 road win at Furman last Saturday.
Â
Lehigh carried over the momentum from a strong finish against the Blue Devils into a strong start against the Paladins. The Mountain Hawks took a 6-0 lead before the game was 12 minutes old. The run started with three goals in a 55-second span as senior Billy Oppenheimer scored an extra-man goal, freshman Eddie Bouhall scored his first-career goal 39 seconds later and freshman Tristan Rai scored the first of his four goals just 16 seconds after that.
Â
Furman responded with a 4-0 second-quarter run to pull within 6-4 late in the first quarter, but the Mountain Hawks answered with another 6-0 run. Rai scored a big goal at 3:31 of the second quarter to give Lehigh a 7-4 halftime lead then Lehigh opened a 12-4 advantage following five more goals, effectively putting the game away. Senior Reid Weber scored two of the five goals, finishing the game with four goals and two assists for a career-high tying six points. Rai scored four or more goals for his third straight game, posting five points behind four goals and his first-career assist. Senior Alex Eaton also recorded five points behind one goal and a career-high four assists.
Â
Junior Matt Raposo continued his strong start to the season with three points (one goal, two assists) while Oppenheimer finished with two goals. Senior Tripp Telesco led the defense with three groundballs and two caused turnovers, moving over 100 career groundballs in the process. Junior and fellow close defenseman Jason Kozel had three groundballs and a caused turnover while freshman Craig Chick also tallied a pair of groundballs and caused turnovers. Sophomore goaltender Adam Sawicki was stellar, making a career-high 15 saves while allowing just six goals before being relieved by junior Donny Stires.
Â
The win marked Lehigh's seventh in its last 10 games dating back to last season as the Mountain Hawks improved to 2-1, standing 2-1 or better after three contests for a sixth straight season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are 17-8 all-time in Patriot League openers and will play Holy Cross in an opener for the first time since 2008. This will mark the sixth time in the last eight years that Lehigh opens its league slate at home. Last year, the Mountain Hawks earned an impressive 19-7 win at Holy Cross, which helped propel a strong late-season surge. The 19 goals marked a season high, led by the attack of Weber, Dan Taylor and Patrick Corbett who combined for 13 goals and five assists.
Â
Holy Cross is 0-3 on the young season, but the Crusaders have played extremely competitive games, including a tight 11-10 loss at No. 14 Harvard on Tuesday. Holy Cross jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter, but the Crimson held a 6-2 edge in the fourth quarter to tie the score before pulling out the victory in double overtime.
