BOSTON, Mass. - The Lehigh women's track and field team wrapped up action at the Patriot League Indoor Championships with a third place finish on Sunday afternoon. Senior Elizabeth Weiler captured a Patriot League championship in the 3,000 meter run, and the distance medley relay team of Hannah Leskow, Rachel Okun, Tyler Scanlin and Marissa Karl set a new Patriot League Championship meet record with their league title victory. Freshman Kaitlyn Toman also tied the school pole vault record and junior Kiana Wright set a new school benchmark in the triple jump. Overall at this year's meet, the Lehigh women set four new school records, eclipsed three PL Championship meet records and crowned six individual champions.
Junior Courtney Avery was honored as the league's Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Meet after she set a PLC meet and school record on Saturday with her 1.81 meter winning leap in the high jump. It is the second major award she has won in her career at the PL Indoor Championships, after winning the Rookie of the Meet award in 2014. Avery, along with Weiler, Leskow, Scanlin, Okun and Karl were all honored as First Team All-Patriot League selections. Michaela Bubak (weight throw) and Gabrielle Wardle (high jump and pentathlon) earned Second Team all-league honors for their runner up finishes.
"Our girls were really tough," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It was an unprecedented meet with 13 or 14 Patriot League records set, so every team came to play and we were ready to go and earned a couple for ourselves. It really speaks to how incredibly good the league is getting."
Weiler captured the league title in the 3,000 meter run, coming within 1.62 seconds of her own school record, breaking the tape with a season-best mark of 9:46.80. A cross country All-American and the school record holder in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs, the win is the first indoor title and second overall track championship (2014 outdoor 10,000m) of her career. Freshman Maura Henderson also hit an ECAC qualifying mark in the event and scored three team points with her sixth place finish (PR-9:54.82).
"That was Weiler's third 3,000 meter race of the season," Utesch said. "She really carried the team while she was injured and a lot of people looked toward her and respected her. And now having her back on the track puts everyone else at ease. Her leadership has been outstanding."
Lehigh later grabbed its second title of the day, courtesy of the distance medley relay team of Leskow, Okun, Scanlin and Karl. Their winning time of 11:52.76 is not only a new program record, but also the fastest time in the event in Patriot League Championship history.
"Well run race," Utesch said. "Marissa ran an incredibly smart tactical race. She really showed her maturity there."
Wright won her flight and took fourth place overall with her school record triple jump of 11.90 meters, smashing the old school benchmark of 11.48 meters. The previous record was the third longest standing women's indoor record on the books, set by Lindsay Hinsch in 2004.
"Wright had almost a full meter on her PR," Utesch said. "And to set the school record on top of that is incredible."
Brittany Le Jouan set a new PR in 11th place, topping the 11 meter mark for the first time in her career at 11.23m. Freshman Noreen Byrne did the same, placing 12th with a PR of 11.13m.
Toman also had a career day for the Mountain Hawks, hitting an IC4A qualifying mark and tying the school record with her pole vault of 3.60 meters to finish in third place overall.
Lehigh closed out the field events with Amanda Youngblood finishing in fifth place with her shot put of 12.45 meters, finishing one spot ahead of teammate Nia Baker, who grabbed a new PR at 12.43m.
On the track, Clare Severe, Laura Barnes and Brenna Clark all scored points and set PR's for Lehigh in the mile run, with Severe's fourth place tally of 4:58.30 being an ECAC qualifier. Barnes landed in sixth place at 5:00.63 while Clark took seventh in 5:04.13.
Katie Hatler landed on the podium in third place in the 60m hurdles, racing across the line in 8.89 seconds.
Kristen Lavallee represented the Mountain Hawks in the 400 meter dash, taking 15th place overall with a new indoor PR of 1:00.55.
Next up in the 500 meter dash, Hanna Brosky added to the team's point total by collecting a seventh place finish of 1:16.24. Rachel Okun followed behind in 11th place and Lindsay Voltz settled for 15th place.
Both Lehigh racers registered points in the 800 meter run as Scanlin set a PR, 2:13.95 fourth place time that also qualifies her for the ECAC/IC4A meet. Severe followed closely behind in 2:15.69 with the best time of her freshman season.
The Brown and White earned a combined seven points from the ECAC qualifying duo of Karl and Leskow, with Karl (2:54.00) completing the 1,000 meter run in fifth place, and Leskow (PR-2:54.71) right behind in sixth.
Concluding the women's events, was the 4x400 meter relay team of Natalie Jacobs, Voltz, Brosky and Byrne, who combined on an eighth place finish of 4:00.32.
Boston University captured its second league title in three years, just holding off defending champion Bucknell. Lehigh scored 129.5 team points to round out the top three.
