BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 11 Lehigh heads to western Pennsylvania for two tough tests in its first road duals of the season as the Mountain Hawks will visit No. 21 Pitt Friday before heading to Edinboro on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks opened their dual season with a convincing 33-7 win over Bucknell on Nov. 11. Lehigh then went to Troy, N.Y. and performed well at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, going 35-15 overall with six of the Mountain Hawks' 17 entrants going 3-0 in their respective pools. Seniors Randy Cruz and Doug Vollaro, junior Darian Cruz and sophomore Ryan Preisch all went 4-0 in action last weekend.
Â
Pitt has started this season 3-0 while Edinboro is 0-2. The Panthers rallied late to defeat the Fighting Scots 20-16 last Sunday at McComb Fieldhouse.
Â
Two freshmen made their varsity dual debuts in the win over Bucknell. Deferred freshman Jordan Kutler debuted with a win over Victor Lopez at 157, while true freshman Kyle Gentile dropped a 7-4 decision at 184. While true freshmen have been regular contributors for the Mountain Hawks in recent years, none of the 10 true freshmen on last year's roster saw varsity action. Deferred freshmen Cole Walter and Andrew Price made their Lehigh debuts at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.
Â
Seventeen Lehigh wrestlers competed at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Nov. 13 in Troy, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a strong showing in the modified round-robin tournament format, with six Mountain Hawks posting 3-0 records to win their respective pools. Overall Lehigh went 35-15 on the day. The six wrestlers who went 3-0 on the day were junior Darian Cruz (125), senior Randy Cruz (141), freshman Kent Lane (157), sophomore Ryan Preisch (174), senior Doug Vollaro (285) and freshman Christian Colucci (285).
Â
Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro wrestled for the Panthers from 1985-1989, under the guidance of Rande Stottlemyer, who retired following the 2012-13 season. Pittsburgh's only four-time All-American, Santoro amassed a 167-13 record in four seasons for the Panthers, and won national titles at 142 in 1988 and 1989. A three-time EWL Champion, Santoro is also the Panthers' career leader with 43 falls and posted an incredible 97-3 record over his final two seasons. Pittsburgh assistant coach Drew Headlee returned to his alma mater in 2014 after two seasons as Lehigh's volunteer assistant coach.
Â
Pitt enters its home opener Friday night with a 3-0 dual record. The Panthers opened their season with wins over Ohio and Campbell on November 6. Last weekend, Pitt trailed Edinboro 16-11 with two bouts remaining but wins from Zach Bruce and Ryan Solomon lifted the Panthers to a 20-16 victory. Solomon pinned Edinboro's Billy Miller in the final bout to clinch the dual. He is one of three nationally ranked Panthers, coming in at No. 14 at 285 according to InterMat. Pitt's other two ranked wrestlers are Dom Forys (No. 8 at 133) and TeShan Campbell (No. 13 at 165). Lehigh Valley native Mikey Racciato from Pen Argyl is one of two possibilities at 149. Jason Peters is in his fourth season as head coach after succeeding Rande Stottlemyer, who was Pat Santoro's coach and guided the Panthers for more than 30 years.
Â
Edinboro welcomes Lehigh to town for the first time since the Mountain Hawks' 1995-96 season-opener. The Fighting Scots are looking for their first win of 2016-17 after dropping a 24-13 decision at No. 6 Virginia Tech on Nov. 5 and then falling to Pitt in Edinboro's home opener last weekend. Edinboro's projected lineup includes four nationally-ranked wrestlers according to InterMat. Sophomore Pat Lugo (No. 13 at 149) is the highest-ranked Fighting Scot, while Sean Russell (125), Austin Matthews (165) and Billy Miller (285) all appear in the rankings. Edinboro's probable lineup features four freshmen and just one senior. Tim Flynn, the 2014-15 NWCA National Coach of the Year, is in his 19th season at Edinboro.
Â
Lehigh and Pitt will meet for the 61sh time with the Mountain Hawks holding a 42-17-2 advantage. The Mountain Hawks have won 16 of the last 19 duals against the Panthers. Pat Santoro is 6-2 versus his alma mater. Lehigh is just 5-9 versus Edinboro. Prior to last year's dual in Bethlehem, the previous six duals in the series had taken place at neutral sites. Lehigh's last visit to Edinboro was a 28-12 Lehigh win on Nov. 25, 1995 - Greg Strobel's first dual as Lehigh head coach.
Â
Friday's match versus Pitt is set for a 7 p.m. start from Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh. Pitt will offer streaming video of the match on ACC Network Extra which is accessible through WatchESPN. Â
Lehigh will be off for Thanksgiving weekend and will return to action Dec. 4 at Penn State in the 105th dual in that longtime rivalry.
