Duquesne Tops Lehigh 63-49 in Non-League Matchup

11/13/2016 4:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Junior Quinci Mann led Lehigh with a game-high 22 points and senior Kiernan McCloskey tied her career-high with nine rebounds as the Lehigh women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 63-49 decision at Duquesne on Sunday afternoon. It is the third time in McCloskey's career she has collected nine rebounds in a game, and Mann has now scored 22 points in each of the team's first two contests, which is two points shy of her career-high. Freshman Cameryn Benz added seven points and four rebounds off the bench for the Mountain Hawks, freshman Camryn Buhr collected six points and six rebounds and Hailey Pascoe chipped in five points. Freshman Gena Grundhoffer also tied for second on the team with six rebounds.

Duquesne dominated on the glass throughout the game, outrebounding Lehigh 69-40, including a 35-10 advantage on the offensive glass. Amadea Szamsoi led Duquesne with 15 points and 19 rebounds, and Chassidy Omogrosso added 18 points and six boards. Both teams now sit at 1-1 on the season.

"Certainly the rebounding was a little disconcerting," head coach Sue Troyan after the game. "Honestly, that was probably the difference in the game. We gave them a lot of second and third chance opportunities that allowed them to open up the game. We didn't shoot very well from three either, and I thought we had some clean looks at the three, but they just didn't fall."

Mae Williams put Lehigh on the board first by drawing a foul and hitting a free throw just 18 seconds in, before a layup by Mann 30 seconds later gave Lehigh an early 3-0 lead. A Mann jumper gave Lehigh a 5-2 lead at the 7:49 mark before a Buhr layup got the lead back to three points at 7-4. Duquesne then jumped out to a 26-6 run to close the quarter sparked by a blistering 61.1 field goal percentage and a 16-7 advantage on the glass.

Lehigh's defense knuckled down coming out of the break for the second quarter, holding the Dukes to just 14 points and 5-for-25 shooting from the field. Buhr got the Lehigh scoring started in the second quarter with a pair of free throws at the 8:05 mark to make it 32-15. Hedstrom then netted her two first half points just under a minute later, and Kiernan McCloskey added two points to make it a 37-19 game going into the media timeout.

Duquesne upped the advantage to 20 by the 1:25 mark with a pair of free throws by Omogrosso, who added a layup with 32 seconds left to go to give the Dukes their largest lead of the half at 44-22 going into the locker room.

Duquesne outrebounded Lehigh 36-20 in the opening half. Mann scored 11 points in the first half while Williams, Grundhoffer, Buhr and Hedstrom shared the team lead with three rebounds apiece.

Lehigh rattled off six of the first seven points to begin the third quarter, highlighted by a pair of buckets from Mann and a layup by Buhr to make it 44-28. Benz got Lehigh within 13 points at the 4:41 mark with a layup underneath, and drew the foul. That was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get, as Duquesne then closed the third quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 56-37 lead into the fourth.

Duquesne upped the lead to 15 with 5:38 to go in the game, forcing a Lehigh timeout. Szamosi nailed a layup and drew a foul with 3:20 to go, hit the free throw and gave the Dukes their largest lead of the second half at 63-42. Lehigh would respond quickly on a jumper by Hailey Pascoe, and four straight points by Taylor Campbell over the final 3:09 to bring the final score to 63-49.
"There's certainly some bright spots with them," Troyan said of her freshmen. "I thought Cam Benz came in and did a lot of great things on the offensive end. We got hurt on the rebounding end, and that's our youth. There was a little inexperience and a little lack of strength today compared to what they saw today in Duquesne's post players.

"But, it's a great learning lessons for us," Troyan said. "This is a game you can take a lot from and learn. When you play a quality opponent like this, some things are exposed, and some things were exposed today that we need to get better at."

Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be a matchup with Delaware State in Wednesday morning's Education Day game. The opening tip is set for a 11 a.m. from Stabler Arena.
