EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Lauren Dice gave the Lehigh field hockey team a lead late in the second half, and the Mountain Hawks' didn't allow a shot on goal for the game's first 58:51, but it wasn't enough as Lafayette scored a pair of late goals to down the Mountain Hawks, 2-1 on Friday evening. Lehigh will wrap up its season on Sunday when it hosts Brown at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
Â
"It was definitely the best game that we've played collectively as a team this season," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "As disappointing as it is to lose to Lafayette, I am walking away with a really strong sense of pride in the way that we played tonight. There were some phenomenal performances from certain people I haven't seen so far this season; we needed them to step up in crucial moments and they were able to do that for us."
Â
The first half saw eight shots between the two teams, five from the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh fired the only three shots on goal, from senior Marissa Glatt in the fifth minute and a pair from senior Janelle High in the 31st minute, but Lafayette goalkeeper Katelyn Arnold made the saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Â
The Mountain Hawks fired just two second-half shots, but both were on goal. Lehigh's fifth shot on goal found the back of the cage as Dice converted a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season, giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead at the 57:31 mark.
Â
However, the Leopards responded with the equalizer just 1:20 later then, took the lead at the 64:11 mark. The Mountain Hawks couldn't pull even as they fell just short against their archrivals.
Â
"We worked really hard these last two weeks to focus on some of our weaknesses that we knew they would try to exploit and today, I felt like we did a really nice job of implementing our game plan in order to keep the game competitive," said Dallmeyer.
Â
Final shots were tied at seven while the Leopards held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Lehigh's defense stood tall, allowing just two shots on goal for the game.
Â
"Our huge focus coming into this season was overall defense, not just from our backline but all over the field," said Dallmeyer. "Tonight, we saw big plays, starting from our attack line with Gabby Tofig playing a great job, all the way back to our defensive line and Kendra Sandhu making huge plays for us. I think the team drew a lot of energy throughout the game off of some of those plays, which is why we were able to maintain composure and not lose momentum for any length of time."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will now wrap up their season on Sunday when they host Brown at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. Glatt, High, Tofig, Kassidy Green and Julia Ward will all be recognized prior to their final collegiate games.
Â
"Tonight was the best performance I've seen collectively from the senior class and I'm really thrilled to see them conclude their season with such a high level of play," said Dallmeyer. "I'm looking forward to seeing them bringing that momentum into the last game on their home field."
