BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding a five game winning streak, Lehigh will leave the Lehigh Valley for the final time in the regular season, as the Mountain Hawks wrap-up a two game road trip Saturday at Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks rode an outstanding defensive effort to a 35-3 win at Georgetown last weekend, a win that moved Lehigh to 2-0 in Patriot League play. The Lehigh defense limited Georgetown to just 177 yards of offense and allowed its fewest points since 2009. Offensively, Lehigh quarterbacks combined to throw for 348 yards and three touchdowns, with junior Gatlin Casey enjoying another outstanding game with six catches for 164 yards and two scores.
Holy Cross concludes a three game home stand as Lehigh visits on Saturday. The Crusaders bounced back from a tough 21-20 loss to Bucknell on Oct. 8 to defeat No. 20 Harvard 27-17 last weekend. The Crusaders limited the Crimson to just 245 yards of offense and sacked Harvard quarterbacks six times. Harvard led 7-0 before Holy Cross scored 21 unanswered points.
Linebacker Kyle Young had eight tackles, two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles on the way to Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors. Nick McBeath is the top tackler for the Crusaders with 64 stops. Geoff Wade threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns as he continues to start in place of injured senior Peter Pujals. Offensively, Richie DiNicola and Jake Wieczorek are weapons in the passing game, while Brendan Flaherty has done a little bit of everything with 103 rushing yards and 30 receptions for 273 yards. He also threw a 24-yard touchdown pass against Bucknell. Domenic Cozier rushed for more than 100 yards against Harvard and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Holy Cross also owns victories over Morgan State and Lafayette.
No matter who has been under center, Lehigh's passing offense has thrived during its five-game winning streak, averaging 409.4 yards over that five-game stretch with 21 touchdown passes and four interceptions. Senior Nick Shafnisky threw for more than 300 yards against Penn, Princeton and Colgate, while sophomore Brad Mayes stepped in with a school record performance against Yale and added 247 yards and two touchdowns in nearly three quarters of relief at Georgetown. As a team, Lehigh ranks second nationally in completion percentage and fourth in passing offense.
Lehigh's defense turned in its best performance in quite some time in last week's win over Georgetown. The three points allowed were the fewest allowed by the Mountain Hawks since a 27-0 shutout of the Hoyas in 2009. Lehigh limited Georgetown to just 177 yards of total offense, the fewest for a Mountain Hawk opponent since Drake mustered 177 in the 2010 season-opener. The last time Lehigh kept an opponent under 200 yards of offense was when the Mountain Hawks limited Georgetown to 199 in their 2011 Patriot League title-clinching victory.
Despite a number of injuries and underclassmen forced into key roles, Lehigh's secondary has held its own in 2016. The Mountain Hawks held Georgetown to just 103 passing yards and lead the Patriot League yielding just 170 per game. Senior Brandon Leaks is the most experienced member of the secondary, with sophomores Donavon Harris and Sam McCloskey and freshman Riley O'Neil holding down starting roles.
Ed Mish enjoyed a strong freshman season as Lehigh's kicker, converting 40 of his 43 extra point attempts and going 9-for-12 on field goals, with a long of 43 yards against Holy Cross. Mish has converted all 39 of his extra points so far this season and tied a school record with nine PATs at Yale. He eclipsed the 100 point mark for his career with six PATs and a field goal versus Colgate. Mish was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season for his efforts (5-for-5 PATs and 64.5 yard kickoff average with three touchbacks) against Georgetown. He has also taken over the punting duties for Lehigh, averaging 41.6 yards on 26 punts with six placed inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
Lehigh and Holy Cross get together for the 32nd time with Lehigh holding a 17-13-1 lead in the series. Lehigh has won five of the last six game against Holy Cross, with the Crusaders taking the last meeting in Worcester in 2014. These teams first met in 1924 and did not meet again until 1986.
Lehigh has had little trouble with Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001. The Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 38-13 in the last 15 games.
