BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Seven weeks to the day after their last meet at Lafayette, the Lehigh swimming and diving programs will return to the pool on Friday afternoon at Army West Point. The Patriot League matchup marks the beginning of the final four meets of the regular season throughout the month of January.
On November 20, Lehigh's men won their third consecutive meet with a 167-124 victory at Lafayette while the women extended their win streak to five with a dominating 125-point victory. The Mountain Hawks set a combined 13 new pool records (10 women, three men), while sweeping the meet from the Leopards for the eighth straight season.
Jake Hassel captured a win in the 100 fly in pool record time, and Justin Kostelnik picked up his first victory of the season in the 1,000 free. Jacob Moyar (200 fly and 500 free), Dean Shafritz (100 and 200 back) and Justin White (100 and 200 free) all picked up a pair of individual wins on the evening. Moyar and White joined Jamal Willis and Zach Tieke to win the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Sydney Bornstein broke her own school record 200 fly for her fifth win of the season in that event. Lehigh also took the top three places in the 1,000 yard freestyle and 100 backstroke. Freshman Melissa Feeney took home her third win of the season by claiming the 100 yard breaststroke. Kaitlyn Ruffing won her fifth 50 yard freestyle in as many tries this season, and also set a new school record time by winning the 100 free. The Mountain Hawks' three 200 freestyle relay teams ended the evening with a sweep of the podium, led by the 'A' team of Carolyn Koch, Courtney Ferreira, Kelly Carroll and Kaitlyn Ruffing.
Over the break, White and Willis both competed at the U.S. Winter Nationals and became the first Mountain Hawk swimmers since at least the mid-1970s to qualify for next summer's Olympic Trials.
The Black Knights enter the matchup with Lehigh carrying a 4-1 mark on both the men's and women's sides. Both squads are coming off lopsided defeats at preseason league favorite, Navy. The men finished in second place at the Terrier Invitational in November, where freshman Jay Yang set two program records in the 200 and 400 IMs.
The Army men previously defeated Columbia for the first time in over 10 years, 153-143 on Nov. 6. Lehigh and Army were both victorious over NJIT, their only common dual meet opponent so far this year.
On the women's side, junior Kelly Hamilton (100 back) and freshman Bailey Smith (200 back) both hit NCAA B-Cut standards against Navy. Sabrina Mortell (10:00.09) set a new program record in the 1,000 yard freestyle, topping the previous Army record by 12 seconds. The team began the season with four straight victories before taking first place out of eight teams at the Terrier Invitational, including league foes Boston University and Colgate.
Friday's action at Crandall Pool in West Point, N.Y. is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. The meet will be streamed live online via the Patriot League Network.
