BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a pair of 1-0 losses to American and Georgetown, the Lehigh field hockey team will look for its first Patriot League win when the Mountain Hawks travel to Bucknell on Saturday. Gametime is set for 11 a.m. Lehigh's defense excelled last weekend, allowing just 15 shots over the 140 minutes of regulation.
The Mountain Hawks allowed only ten shots (seven in regulation) against American Saturday before allowing just eight vs. Georgetown Sunday. Lehigh came ever-so close to beating the Eagles for the first time in program history, taking American to overtime for the second time and first time since 2006. That game ended in a 6-5 final. Along with the defense, the Mountain Hawks created some scoring chances of their own, firing four shots on goal.
Lehigh followed on Sunday with a tough 1-0 defeat against the Hoyas despite a 20-8 shots advantage. The Mountain Hawks held an 11-1 second-half shots edge, which included six shots on goal. In the end, Lehigh couldn't beat goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki, who made 13 saves. A Georgetown defender also made a big defensive save.
Bucknell enters the weekend with a 2-5 record, defeating Monmouth and California. The Bison have lost two straight and four of their last five overall, all to nationally-ranked foes Penn State, Princeton, Delaware and Albany. Bucknell is led offensively by Kiersten Sydnor and Anna Willis who each have five points behind two goals and one assist apiece. Emily Hitchings owns four points (two goals) while Emma Fitzgerald has one goal and one assist. Three different Bison have tallied a defensive save while Shannon Keen has played every minute in goal, posting a 3.00 goals against average and .596 save percentage.
Lehigh leads the all-time series against Bucknell, 21-18-1, but the Bison have won the last three meetings after a 1-0 Mountain Hawk victory in 2011. Last season, Lehigh controlled play for much of the game, but Bucknell scored four goals in the span of 25:05 in the second half for a 4-1 victory.
After Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will return home for three straight games, beginning with a showdown against archrival Lafayette next Saturday (Oct. 3) at 11 a.m.
