Bucknell’s second-half surge downs Lehigh, 4-2

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh freshman Teresa Carotenuto scored a career-high two goals to help the Mountain Hawks take a 2-1 lead until midway through the second half, but Bucknell responded with three goals in an 8:30 span to win, 4-2 on Saturday. It took Lehigh just 6:53 to take a 1-0 lead as the Mountain Hawks gave the defending Patriot League Regular Season Champion Bison all they could handle.
"It was a strong effort that fell short," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We played a beautiful first half then dug ourselves in a hole that was hard to come out of. Teresa had a great game."
Lehigh generated the game's first penalty corner just under seven minutes into the game. After junior Marissa Glatt's initial shot was saved, junior Kassidy Green found Carotenuto and the freshman converted her second goal of the season to break the scoreless deadlock.
Bucknell responded with its first penalty corner a few minutes later, eventually evening the score at the 11:58 mark as a shot from Nicole Rupnik from the top of the circle made it 1-1.
Carotenuto and the Mountain Hawks answered at the 19:31 mark as senior Lindsey Schott found her and the ensuing shot from ten yards out made it 2-1.
The Bison looked to quickly answer again, but Lehigh goalkeeper Julia Ward came up big. The junior made three saves in the span of 3:03, helping defend against three Bucknell penalty corners in that span. Lehigh responded with two penalty corners and two shots on goal before the half came to a close, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't extend their lead as the score remained 2-1 after 35 minutes of play.
Bucknell controlled play for much of the second half, finally beating Ward at the 47:00 mark to make it 2-2 following a scramble in front of the cage. The Bison followed by taking a 3-2 lead at 51:10 on a direct shot off a penalty corner before an unassisted goal at 55:30 made it 4-2.
Lehigh generated a late penalty corner, but couldn't pull any closer.
Final shots were 16-6 in favor of Bucknell while the Bison held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with six saves while Bucknell goalie Shannon Keen made four. Senior Erin Ricker and junior Janelle High also tallied a defensive save.
The Mountain Hawks will return home for three straight games, beginning with a showdown against archrival Lafayette next Saturday (Oct. 3) at 11 a.m.
