Lafayette scores second-half goal to edge Lehigh, 2-1

10/3/2015 7:27:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team quickly tied the score after Lafayette took a 1-0 lead, but a second-half Leopards' goal was the difference in a 2-1 defeat on Saturday. Senior Lindsey Schott scored the Mountain Hawks' goal off a pass from classmate Zoey Pacheco while junior Julia Ward was strong in goal, finishing with six saves.

"I thought it was a good, competitive game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "It was a good fight between both teams. I didn't love the outcome, but I think we put our best effort out there.

The first half featured several opportunities for both sides, but only one shot on goal between the two teams. Lehigh earned one of the first chances around two minutes into the game when junior Marissa Glatt put a ball towards goal looking for a tip. The pass was just out of the reach of two Mountain Hawks, including senior Taylor Mygatt by the near side post.

Glatt and Mygatt had another opportunity in the 13th minute when Glatt was sprung in all alone, firing a hard shot from near the top of the circle. Mygatt just missed turning the wide shot into a goal, but the ball was just out of her reach.

Lafayette eventually converted the game's first shot on goal into a 1-0 lead at the 24:26 mark on a direct shot off a penalty corner.

Lehigh quickly tied the score just over two minutes later as Pacheho unleashed a hard pass from the top of the circle to Schott stationed by the near post. The ensuing shot beat Lafayette goalkeeper Katelyn Arnold to make it 1-1 at the 26:46 mark.

Early in the second half, Lehigh junior goalkeeper Julia Ward stood tall, making three consecutive saves in a quick 10-second span in the 39th minute. After back-and-forth action over the following minutes, Ami Turner fired a high shot which Ward got a piece of, but it trickled behind her to give Lafayette a 2-1 lead at the 54:31 mark.

Lehigh continued to pressure, with its last quality opportunity coming in the 68th minute as Glatt's hard shot off a penalty corner was saved.

Final shots were 16-6 in favor of Lafayette while the Leopards held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

"We had our opportunities offensively and Lindsay was able to capitalize on the one," said Eversley. "We definitely need to capitalize on more of them. I'm proud that we've been working as a unit from defense to attack, so all lines have shown up. Today, all of them did."

Ward finished with six saves while senior Kat Kneizys made a defensive stop. Arnold posted two saves for Lafayette.

"Julia played really well today," said Eversley. "That second one just got past her, but she put up a good fight. She made a lot of good saves for us."

Lehigh will return to action in 24 hours when the Mountain Hawks host Siena at 12 p.m.
