2015-16 Schedule
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's basketball head coach Sue Troyan announced the 2015-16 schedule Wednesday, which is highlighted by 15 home games in Stabler Arena including the season opener on Friday November 13 against Monmouth.
Lehigh will play a number of formidable opponents in Troyan's 21st season with the program. Lehigh will face two teams that made 2015 NCAA Tournament appearances and three teams that appeared in the WNIT a season ago.
The Mountain Hawks will be opening their season at home for the first time since the 2008 season when Lehigh hosts Monmouth at 7 p.m. on Friday November 13. Lehigh then remains home to host Kutztown in a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on November 15. Lehigh hits the road for games at NJIT and Delaware State on November 19 and 23, respectively, before returning home to host Saint Peter's on Wednesday November 25 at 5 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks will host three teams that won 20-plus games a season ago in the Lehigh Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday and Sunday November 28-29 as the Mountain Hawks welcome Drexel, Villanova and Montana to Stabler Arena. Lehigh opens the tournament against Montana, the defending Big Sky champions and 2015 NCAA Tournament team, at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner of the Lehigh-Montana game will face the winner of Villanova-Drexel Sunday. Both the Wildcats and the Dragons earned spots in the WNIT a season ago, with Villanova advancing to the quarterfinals.
"The Thanksgiving tournament provides some of the best challenges of the non-conference schedule," said Troyan. "Montana comes in off an NCAA berth, while Drexel and Villanova were both NIT teams last season. We are also excited to bring two Philadelphia schools here to Lehigh along with the perennial champions of the Big Sky Conference."
Lehigh will host another formidable opponent on Wednesday December 2 when Saint Joseph's comes to Stabler Arena for the sixth-annual Education Day.
"Once again, Education Day serves as a great opportunity to have an impact in our Lehigh Valley Community while also gaining great exposure for our program to the surrounding Bethlehem elementary and middle schools," explained Troyan. "We expect another record-setting crowd (surpassing last year's attendance of 4,078). This is always one of the most exciting and anticipated games on our schedule and will be even more so with playing against Atlantic 10 power Saint Joseph's."
Lehigh will then head to the Midwest to face Big Ten opponent Illinois on Sunday December 6. The Mountain Hawks have three players on their roster from the state of Illinois in senior Elizabeth Jordan (Roscoe), junior Kari Moffat (Lincolnshire) and freshman Bryce Menendez (Naperville). Following an 11-day break for final exams, the Mountain Hawks will close out non-league play at Rider on Thursday December 17 and at Hampton on Sunday December 20.
"We feel like there is a good balance in our non-conference schedule with six home games and five on the road," said Troyan. "We are excited to play a game at Illinois for senior Elizabeth Jordan, while we also have quite a few challenging games against quality teams who played in the NCAA and NIT post season tournaments. We feel this is a schedule that will challenge our team and ultimately prepare them for the rigors of a highly competitive Patriot League season."
Lehigh opens Patriot League play with back-to-back away games at Army West Point (Dec. 30) and Boston University (Jan. 2). The Patriot League home opener will be played on Wednesday January 6 at 7 p.m. against Loyola. Lehigh will also host defending league champion American (January 9), Holy Cross (January 16), Lafayette (January 23), Boston University (January 30), Bucknell (February 10), Navy (February 17), Colgate (February 24) and Army West Point (February 27).
The Patriot League Tournament will take place from March 5-12. The first round and quarterfinal matchups will take place at highest seeds, while the semifinals and championship game will be played Friday and Saturday March 11 and 12 at the highest remaining seed.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to build upon a 2014-15 season that saw Lehigh finish 19-11 overall and 9-9 in league play. Lehigh earned the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and picked up road wins at No. 3 Holy Cross and No. 2 Army to earn a championship berth where the Mountain Hawks fell to eventual champion American.
All Lehigh home games will be streamed for free live on the Patriot League Network. In addition, all away league games will also be broadcast live through the network.
