BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh baseball standout Matt McBride has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Colorado Rockies, as announced by the organization Wednesday. McBride joined the club at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, Wednesday evening and is scheduled to start at first base and bat fifth in Thursday's 12:10 p.m. series finale.
The Rockies selected the contract of the infielder/outfielder from Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes for Wednesday's game. The club designated outfielder Drew Stubbs for assignment to make room on the 25 and 40-man rosters for McBride. McBride pinch hit in the top of the seventh inning of Wednesday's game.
The call up comes after McBride put together another strong season for the Isotopes, batting .328 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs at Albuquerque. The former Lehigh standout earned a spot in the Triple-A All-Star Game in July, but had to miss the event due to injury. This is the third promotion for McBride, the other two of which came in August of 2012 and 2014.
As a Mountain Hawk, McBride led Lehigh to its first-ever Patriot League Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. He won the league's triple crown (.417 batting average, 12 home runs, 61 RBI) and set a then-league record with 88 hits, which now ranks third all-time. After his breakout junior campaign, he was named an ABCA All-American, Louisville Slugger All-American and College Baseball Foundation All-American. The Bethlehem native was drafted in the second round of the 2006 draft by the Cleveland Indians and traded to the Rockies' organization in 2011.
